Yeah yeah, they both suck, etc but which was easier to watch for you? Rise seems to have a more favorable response, but I'm not so sure.

The Last Jedi is a mixed bag, with some stuff that I like, some stuff I don't like, and some stuff in between. I think it's an okay movie overall. For me, Rise of Skywalker is much worse.

The Last Jedi. I remember enjoying Rise of Skywalker when I first saw it but I never rewatched the movie and a lot of the problems really sank in for me.

I don't have a big issue with The Last Jedi. I actually like it somewhat. In fact if I were to re-watch any of the sequels it would be The Last Jedi. Say what you want about the writing, but Rian Johnson is a far more interesting director than JJ Abrams. He also manages to make Domhnall Gleeson's character tolerable.
The Rise of Skywalker could have found a way to mix both The Force Awaken and The Last Jedi to make a creative final chapter, but they were responding to the hate for the latter and doubled down bigtime. What we get is the most uninteresting Star Wars film. The best thing I can say about it is that it is better than Solo.
The Last Jedi - 6.5/10
The Rise of Skywalker - 5/10

TLJ is a slow moving convoy of Rebels being tracked by a just as slow First Order fleet or whatever. What a joke.
Luke's final days shouldn't have been such the mess either. At least Rise isn't pretending as much of what it isn't.

Fact is, the ST is better than the god-awful prequel trilogy (PT), although Revenge Of The Sith was a pretty good film. But that's not saying much, the ST is not all that great.
However, I do think Rise OS is the best one. I know a lot of people didn't like it but I thought it had some really cool nostalgic moments in it. It was almost like a tribute movie to SW fans. Casual fans that is... I think it's mostly the hardcore SW nerds that didn't like it.
But imagine for a moment that the ST were the first ones to be released all those years ago. I think there would be less hate for them. The original movies were so iconic that nothing would ever match them.

I don't hate the SW sequels though and while you are correct that they would have been loved if the OT didn't exist, well of course, but the OT does exist and that makes the sequels feel pointless as they are. I am all for nostalgia, but these movies the nostalgia is at the expense of story. Rogue One finds a clever way around this by being a bridge between the prequels and the OT. |

What is TLJ pretending to be? I was actually entertained enough that I didn't even think about the similarities to Empire. It was only after someone mentioned it that I was like "oh, yeah." I thought TLJ was a ballsy move by Rian Johnson, who is a better filmmaker than JJ Abrams by a significant margin imo. |

I've more/less had my fill of analyzing the who, what, why and where of TLJ. When it comes down to it, analysis/place in the Star Wars universe/significance aside, I find it highly watchable. TROS came along and answered many questions from TLJ, and I always felt one of the strengths of TLJ was the unanswered questions it left us. Fact is when TLJ is on TV, I've no issues watching it. I have no secret, better version of "how it could have gone" in my head. I have my criticisms of TLJ and TROS. Criticisms of the latter are more fierce. I don't appreciate CGI of deceased actors (even in Rogue One), I thought it was cowardly not to kill Chewy (pulling punches), and I almost groaned out loud in the theater when Hux was the spy. That was one of the worst twists (if it can so be called) I've ever seen.
I liked The Last Jedi, even if my best praises and observations are a bit dated, but it left me feeling like I absolutely had to know how it ended. The possibilities seemed endless. No conclusion seemed obvious to me, and when I watch TLJ on TV, it still gives me that sense of wonder even though I know what happens. It's a good movie. Just too ambitious and disconnected from the others. It's damn near a standalone movie. If there were a better, more fitting version of it in its place, the TLJ that we got would be like the highly coveted deleted scene version of the movie, like a director's cut.
I don't mind either of them when they're on TV. TLJ is practically its own canon world, for better or worse. I find it the oddest of all Star Wars movies.
That was lengthier than what I set out to write. Oh.
I however entertain no criticisms whatsoever of people who like one set over another. Your emotions tell you what you like. The rest (arguments, analysis, criticisms) are mostly white noise justifying what your gut tells you.
For the record I voted Jedi.

That being said, it just wasn't enough to save the PT. They're just bad films in my opinion. Imagine those films coming out before the OT... yikes...

Palpatine is the main villain in the prequels, he is just more behind the scenes, but I really like all 3 villains, especially General Grievous. I don't particularly care for the villains in the sequel trilogy. Kylo Ren grew on me in TLJ, but I don't think TROS really does anything interesting with him and then we are just stuck with the Emperor...again. I am one of the few who doesn't mind Jar Jar Binks. I think the prequels are visual feasts, with great world-building and fun characters. That is why I like them. With the sequels I don't. I am not going to defend them as great scripts though, but they are more fun and are more unique than the sequels and are actually building to something and we know what they are building to, which is what makes Revenge of the Sith so fulfilling. |

My biggest issue with the prequels is Jake Lloyd. I think that he has gotten enough slack, but he is quite bad in The Phantom Menace. I don't even mind Hayden Christensen in the prequels. I actually do think he is menacing in them and I think he portrays his inner battle well-enough for these movies. Do I wish a better actor and an actor who is less of a "heartthrob" Of course. I think Adam Driver would have made for a great Anakin. The problem with him in the sequels is we have already seen all of this. He is basically just a retread of Anakin/Darth Vader. |

I agree, but he also isn't Darth Vader yet. My main problem is I never imagined Darth Vader was a pretty boy when he was younger. As I pointed out I do think Christensen is definitely lacking, but he does it well enough for me to just go with it. I don't think he is terrible like many people do. I am actually not a fan of Hayden Christensen even outside of Star Wars, though I haven't seen Shattered Glass. Jake Lloyd on the other hand is difficult for me to watch. I don't blame him, I blame George Lucas for casting a child who can't act. |
