In all seriousness though, who here has seen this movie and what are your thoughts?

Some wino going around saying his dad got cucked by a deity and he's the son but also the deity itself and whatnot is pretty silly, yeah.
...oh, you meant the rest of the movie? Ba dum bump.
I haven't seen it but I saw the play. It is what it is, but some of that music honestly kinda slaps.

I have to admit I’m a fan, but more of the rock opera itself.
For example, I love listening to the CD of the movie more than actually watching the movie, because you get all the story, dialogue, lyrics & music (which I love) but without the distracting visuals.
But I still like watching the movie. Like Brad, I’ve also seen the play (years after seeing the movie).
I like the way it modernizes (for the time) the story of Jesus Christ. I’m not religious, but it made me more interested in the story of JC. I think I recall Siskel & Ebert talking about the movie (they liked it) and saying they’d had a religious experience watching it…lol.

One of my favourite movies. I watch it at least every other year, but usually at least once a year. Usually around Good Friday. It struck a great chord with me years ago.

Not a fan of rock operas though. I can't stand Rocky Horror Picture Show for example. The again I have only watched 20 minutes. I am went to bed and woke up in the past 40 minutes and am going to go back to bed for a while. I plan to finish it later.

I like the songs, like “Heaven on their minds,” “Everything’s alright now”, “Jerusalem”, “This Jesus must Die” “I don’t know how to love him”, and “Superstar” I like Carl Anderson’s Judas and Yvonne Elliman’s Mary.
I lack pictures but I would include H B Warner from THE KING OF KINGS (1927), Claude Heater in BEN-HUR (1959) and Robert Powell JESUS OF NAXARETH.

That’s what I’ve heard. If you watch the movie Fame (1980), there’s a scene where you get a glimpse of what it’s like to see it live with an audience.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a good way to ambassador the story if you've never heard it. I've seen other Jesus story movies since and it's uncanny how well JCS adds up in the details. It's like something I would liken to a graphic novel version of The Bible; something that breaks it down and makes it accessible. I didn't grow up around the story, so I found JCS educational.
IMO, Judas is the real star. Jesus is kind of a prissy pants and I found myself agreeing with Judas more than anyone. It helps that he's a good singer with deep expressions and soulful eyes.
Unlike musicals, all dialogue is sung. I think that's the difference between a musical and an opera. Nonetheless, seeing the story applied to music opened my eyes to what else could be done with them, so for me, it was kind of a gateway movie.

The Rocky Horror live performer thing is also a major subplot in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

That’s what I figured (didn’t mean to imply you hadn’t, just that I hadn’t). Going back to your post about seeing the play JCS, I saw the play about 15-20 years ago, and would you believe Ted Neeley himself was playing Jesus. So that was kind of cool. Interestingly, Judas was played by Corey Glover, the lead singer of the band Living Colour.

Maybe the difference is I am overly familiar with the story of Jesus. Not only seeing a bunch of movies about him already, but I am also was raised Catholic and got even more interested in the history of religion after I became an atheist. But really I just don't like movies such as this typically. It is very campy even if it is telling the story well, which so far it is getting it across.

The movie is festooned with theater actor sex appeal if it helps. It sure helps me. ...
I'm a fan of Rocky Horror Picture Show too. The other week, you (I believe) mentioned something about the acts depicted in A Serbian Film could be considered a response to repression. I haven't seen it, but the idea stuck with me. I think RHPS is similar insofar as you can tell a lot about society by what films like RHPS pushed back against. It seems to have come at a time of sexual revolutions and awakenings, and seems like the material worthy of pushing back against prudishness. I think camp is a celebration of just that, rejection of rigid social norms by taking the piss out of them.
JCS less so. The above is just an aside. I'm Jewish by birth, though not raised religiously. It came late into my life for me to know Easter wasn't all bunnies and chocolate. People who aren't Christian or Catholic might take for granted the presumption that Jesus, the apostles, etc. is common knowledge. I think that helps JCS be a kind of Jesus story for beginners like me.

I am somewhat familiar with Judaism (I mean aside from being familiar with The Old Testament), but he said you don't practice.

I've not got the time or the deity for this type of movie.
I did like Alanis Morissette as god in that Silent Bob movie, though.

Eh, I like it okay. I really dig the songs, Ted Neely and Carl Anderson have some powerful goddamn pipes.
