I gave Axis of Evil a 4.5/10 but that might be generous. Not a fan of many sequels in this franchise but of the crappy lot, I remember AoE being less egregious than some others. I enjoy 1-6 in to varying degrees in a bad movie way. So far. 1. Puppet Master II - 5.5/10 2. Puppet Master III - 5.5/10 3. Puppet Master - 5/10 4. Curse of the Puppet Master - 5/10 5. Puppet Master 4 - 5/10 6. Puppet Master 5 - 5/10 7. Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich - 4/10 8. Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys - 3.5/10 (terrible, but hilariously so) 9. Puppet Master: Axis of Evil - 3/10 Was going to rewatch 1-6 at some point but I'll leave my ranking as of now: III - 7/10 I - 7/10 II - 7/10 Littlest Reich - 6.5/10 4 - 6/10 5 - 6/10 Retro - 5/10 (the most ironically enjoyable IMO) Blade: The Iron Cross - 5/10 Axis of Evil - 4.5/10 Curse - 4/10 (found it pretty dull honestly) Axis Termination - 4/10 vs. Demonic Toys - 4/10 Axis Rising - 3.5/10

I like the feel of the movie and the characters. The difference between us is I do not like any of the movies to any true degree of like. The only one I might rate 6/10 is part II, which I am re-watching at the moment.

I find that the older films have a certain charm to them, much like Full Moon's older output in general ranging in the 90s decade. Something about most of everything after the 90s feels hollow and cash-grabby. I guess 6 has its charms too, but I just couldn't care less about the story and it is the first one that I found they utilized the Puppets much less due to budgetary restraints.

It is the first to not use the puppets as much, but it is all about the feel of the movie for me. I don't even remember the story tbh. Sometimes all I need is a certain feel when it comes to these types of bad movies. I hate the feel of Axis Evil and The Littlest Reich, which in the case of the latter I found the movie extremely distasteful and lacking in bad movie charm. Axis of Evil has the most incompetent acting of all the Puppet Master movies I have seen. The main female's "acting" was unbearable.

I can see why TLR is too distasteful for some especially with it being the goriest of them all, but it did give me a bit of what I wanted out of this series from the get-go with puppets causing mayhem. I actively refuse to watch The Legacy which is basically a compilation of clips from the previous 7 films by that point with some other plot spliced in between that looks shit anyway.

Puppet Master II (1990)This is the most fun, creepiest and most creative Puppet Master movie I have seen. It combines '90s era B-movie style with influences from the old universal monster movies. A group of young paranormal researchers are recording the activity in an abandoned hotel where the supernatural puppets have just re-animated their long dead maker Andre Toulon. The performance by the actor who plays Toulon is campy perfection wrapped in bandages. He needs the puppets to kill and steal parts of brains to bring his ultimate plan together, especially once he sees a woman who looks like his long dead wife is one of the paranormal investigators at the hotel. Re-written this could have been a very good horror movie, as is it is just an alright movie with some great horror moments throughout. It is never boring and the tone of the movie is perfect for the kind of B-movie it is. I have always been a fan of the actual puppets in these movies, especially Blade and 6-shooter, but the writing and direction are often a let down. The puppets each have a unique personality to their appearance. This movie does it better than the rest of the movies in the franchise though and is worth watching for that reason. The very ending seems to be setting up a sequel that didn't happen, because Puppet Master III takes the story back to WWII.

Puppet Master (1989)
This is my third time watching this movie and I like it more this time than the last time I watched it, but I still find most of the characters to be quite boring, the mystery to be largely ineffective and the puppets to be poorly utilized until the last act. The movie finally finds a bit more life in the finale when everything is finally explained, but it is a bit of a tedious and frustrating road getting there. The plot involves a group of psychics summoned to a hotel after one of their acquaintances dies and they are being killed off by puppets for reasons that are revealed later. The acting ranges from average to tolerably bad and the overall direction is very dry. The movie does have a memorable score though that is also used in the sequels. Puppet Master II is more straight-forward and has more personality, which I touched on in my short review of that movie.

Wrong Turn (2003; Rob Schmidt) Up until a couple of days ago I had never taken a wrong turn in my life. No, wait, of course I have, what I mean to say is, that I've never watched an instalment of the Wrong Turn franchise, because quite frankly it didn't seem like it would enrich my life in any conceivable way. I'm gonna make it short: I never liked backwoods horror much, and this did very little to change my mind. I might've enjoyed it more had they played the ludicrous story for laughs (a few miles off the main road there lives a family of mutant rednecks who have killed and eaten dozens of people over the years without anyone taking notice), but this was just too bland and lacking in atmosphere and creative visuals (the forest should've been a dark and otherworldly place like in a grim fairy tale). 5/10

Don't Breathe (Fede Alvarez, 2016) This is going to be an unpopular opinion based on how much love this one receives, but I didn’t care for it. It’s a movie that has one really good scene (the basement in the dark) but other than that I didn’t find it overly suspenseful. I hated all the characters in it (which isn’t a problem if I like what’s going on around them, but that is not the case here) and while it is technically well made I just couldn’t get into it. 5/10

Puppet Master: Axis of Evil (2010)The worst of the Puppet Master series I have seen so far. This is the 9th movie in the series and follows a very generic Nazi spy plot. The main character is young man who couldn't join the war because of a bad leg resulting from Polio and he happens to stumble onto these Nazi Spies planning to blow up a factory that is important to the U.S. war effort. So he takes it upon himself to stop these spies with the help of the puppets he discovered after their maker committed suicide, which ties back to the original Puppet Master movie. The problem with this movie isn't so much the generic spy plot as it is with the terrible directing and that the puppets are barely even in the movie. The directing is more amateur than usual for this franchise and the acting is awful by most of the cast. The main actor's performance is passable for this type of B-movie, with the exception of a scene where he is required to cry, but the rest of the cast ranges from very wooden to cringe-inducing. The 6 Puppet Master movies I have seen that were made before this movie are fun bad movies to varying degrees, but this movie is no fun. Indeed awful. This is where I stopped when it comes to the original series. Though I did watch the spin-off ‘The Littlest Reich’. ‘Blade: The Iron Cross’ I might take a chance on, if it’s still on Tubi. Despite a minor moment, at least we got to see Leech woman live up to her name again. Even though she could only manage one leech. At least she did something other than just being a bystander like in a few previous films. One thing though, the new ninja puppet gave me a laugh. Boy, did that design look raggedy and cheap.

Pyewacket (2017; Adam MacDonald) I was rather impressed by Backcountry, so I took a chance on the director's follow-up movie which is more of a ghost story, although it's kept open to interpretation whether the events depicted are indeed of a supernatural origin. It's clear that Adam MacDonald is a much better director than writer. Just like in Backcountry he effectively uses the woods to convey a sense of unease and this time a more diffuse type of menace. The plot though is fairly by-the-numbers. Laurie Holden and Nicole Munoz do some excellent work here, depicting a realistic and at times painful mother-daughter relationship. This is a slow-burn where not much happens, but when it does it gets incredibly intense. The creepy scenes are all the better for only using blood and CGI very sparsely. Up until the last few minutes this was a solid 7 or even more for me, but, oh dear, I thought it really shot itself in the foot with a lacklustre ending. It's not so much what happens in the finale, but how it is depicted, it's one thing that we get no real explanations but the lack of emotional resonance is the real problem here, the trivial conclusion undermining the casts's best efforts, letting this atmopsheric flick sink into medicority. 6/10 Saw this at a film festival couple years back. The two things I still remember are the cruel ending and really loud sound fx.

Lady in White (1988)This is a very strange movie that deals with very dark serious subject matter that I wasn't able to take seriously considering the way it is directed. It is a PG-13 supernatural horror movie crossed with psychological drama about child murder, pedophilia and race. The movie has the feel of a Halloween family film with standout cinematography by Oscar winner Russell Carpenter (Titanic), but then has this very disturbing R-rated subject matter it is addressing. The PG ghost story feel of the movie is at odds with the very disturbing child abuse parts of the story. I also don't think the acting by Lukas Haas is particularly convincing as the main character and some of the supporting performances are inconsistent. I was able to guess who the killer was very early in the movie. I began to get frustrated with the movie quite early on with the tonal shifts and by the end of the movie I was bored. There is a good movie in here somewhere, but as is it is just awkward.

You're right about the tonal shifts and it was just all-around dull. Directed by the same guy who did the 1981 satanic horror movie Fear No Evil.
