The Deadly Camp (Bowie Lau, 1999) I know what this movie wants to be. It wants to be a Hong Kong Texas Chainsaw Massacre. What it is though is a truly horrible slasher movie that’s only notable aspect is being made in Hong Kong rather than America. Poorly edited, poorly shot, no suspense, terrible decisions and just all around a bad movie, and not even in a fun way. Fun note: it was so bad I actually almost fell asleep during it. In fact at one point, I rewound the movie because I thought I did because the scene made no sense and I thought I must have have fallen asleep for a few seconds and missed something. Nope, it was just such a poorly edited scene that the reactions didn't make sense. 1/10 And sadly with this terrible film, I've completed the challenge. 31 first time views. Will I continue? Of course! Hopefully my next watched will be better though. But now I want an Asian Chainsaw Massacre movie!!

I guess it is, but you know, closer to Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Next Generation. Still, not even that good though.

Some killer practical effects in Nightbreed and then a disappointing shift to CGI in Lord of Illusions. Liked both overall, though. With that, completed Clive Barker. No pun intended, but Brad Dourif was on fire in Spontaneous Combustion. One of his best. Got two more Tobe Hooper movies before I finish his filmography. Two also for George A Romero, five for Dario Argento, and one for John Landis (just in the horror category). Haven't made any progress with Wes Craven, though. I watched Nightbreed a few years ago and Lord of Illusions just a couple weeks ago. I thought both were pretty good overall. It's definitely due for a rewatch, but as of now, Clive Barker's most popular movie if my least favorite of the 3. I don't think there's any contest between Hellraiser and Lord of Illusions at least. Another thing I found weird was how the girl went from like age 10 to Famke Janssen and no one else aged at all (and don't get me started on her marriage to Kevin J O'Connor, big yikes).

Yeah I thought that was funny. And yes, them being married was weird. I gave Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions both 7/10. Hellraiser I have at 6/10, but I saw it back in 2014, so maybe I'd appreciate it more if I gave it another shot.

The Wrath (Young-sun Yoo, 2018) Another Korean horror period piece to add to my list this October. There was a good movie buried in here somewhere, but sadly it couldn’t quite pull it off. It feels like it needed to be a slower burn as at first I was enjoying the build up, but unfortunately the last half of the movie moves way too fast. It feels like it needed to be thirty minutes longer, take its time and explain things a bit more/have a more natural way for the characters to learn past events and just build up the threat. As things stand it moves in an unnatural way to keep things “exciting” and has way too many bad CGI moments. 3/10

Dracula Untold (2014; Gary Shore)
I like the idea of bringing Dracula back to his roots and telling the character's origin story in form of a historical feature. It's just that I fear, that the way they actually went about doing it here was all wrong. This should've been a small, intimate, R-rated movie. Instead it's an expensive fantasy-adventure flick, heavy on CGI and rather underwhelming battle scenes. By trying to appeal to the family crowd the frightening aspect of the character is largely lost. I'm not asking for vampire torture porn, but after all there's a reason he was called Vlad, the Impaler. The moral coundrum the protagonist finds himself in is not sufficiently explored either. This could've been stuff for a powerful tragedy. Dracula is trying to do the right thing by protecting his people and his family, but in order to do so he has to make a pact with the devil, losing his humanity and turning into a monster in the process. However Dracula Untold seems to be more interested in delivering superficial thrills. At least the dark and moody visuals are lovely to look at, and Luke Evans makes for a great, energetic leading man. 5.5/10

Looks like I'm almost done the challenge with two remaining films to watch. Last seen was The Changeling which I thought was my favourite FTV so far.
Wanting to go see Saw X this week, but we'll see how it goes.

Erotic Nightmare (Wai-Man Cheng, 1999) Hong Kong Cat III film about a man who buys erotic dreams from a salesman while his wife is ill. The dreams turn deadly in real life as he ends up killing people while in them. It’s stupid Cat III fun if you like these sorts of things, which frankly I find them hilarious. That said, I certainly would not suggest it for everyone. 6/10 Is it played straight, or the humour is intentional?

Malaysian rural folk horror similar in style to the ‘The Wailing’ and ‘The Witch’. I thought it was well-done. Rather slow-burn, where it seems like not much is happening and when things do occur it favours the ambiguous route. Yet the atmosphere creeps up on you and at only 80mins it breezes by. It’s beautifully shot, and the imagery lingers, especially when the horror begins to take shape. Some of those moments are unpleasant and dread inducing, and it breaks out of its slumber for the last 20 to 15 minutes. Though the ending reveal was a touch predictable, especially when you take note of an earlier dialogue exchange. Still in the end, quite an effective horror tale.

Fv: Not sure if it counts? "The Hunting Party" is a 1971 Western take on "The Most Dangerous Game".
RV: The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues RV: Carnival of Souls (1963)

Last viewed was Slotherhouse. The description had me thinking this movie would be a funny spoof in a good way. The idea of a sloth murdering coeds I mean that sounds promising right? The absurdity of it could bring some easy enjoyment. Boy was I wrong.
The writing tries to laugh at itself with stupid one liners and such but they're just so bad that you're not laughing at them, you just feel nauseous. The term cringe is over used now days but I truly cringed at this movie. Its gives a slapstick kind of vibe. At one point you have the sloth searching the internet. There is a scene that you've seen done hundreds of times far better in other films and it somehow feels like its going on forever. It was like watching the 3rd Lord of the Rings films ending taking forever to finish. The kills aren't creative or fun in any way. There is a character in this film named Zenny and I truly have no idea what they were shooting for there. Her dialogue is so unnatural that I dont get what they're trying to mock. Not sure if it was the actors choice but just the way she delivers said dialogue is painful.
They could have done something creative here. Have the sloth killing these people accidentally or something. Have the sloth actually be slow and make these deaths so weird like trying to kill somebody with a million paper cuts it takes so long for the sloth to break skin. Instead he is like a cat and jumps out of places and drugs peoples drinks.
Horror comedies can be amazing like Tucker and Dale vs Evil or Shaun of the Dead. Its the writing that really helps those movies as they are spoofs but intelligently done. This film felt like it was written by a 10 year old. Worst part is it didn't even reach an "oh this is so bad its hilarious and entertaining" which I thought it would eventually become.
This movie was the equivalent to a fart joke. It is currently the worst film I've watched this challenge.

I re-watched Poltergeist 2 and Exorcist 2, why? Are these the 2 worst part 2s in a horror series? Or at least the biggest dropoffs in quality from a 1 to 2?
