It's always bonus money, for lowest risk for the player and agent. Next season will be tight, but then Tavares will be due, & paid less, combined with the cap going up... for Marner. The Cap has nothing to do with the bonuses. It's so he gets paid the bonus in a lump some on Canada Day, and if the season is delayed for any reason... well he's already got most of his money.

Excellent, we had a comeback win in hockey central, the "Vatican" of hockey!

Leafs coaching change on deck... fundamentals in their own end is atrocious. Keefe isn't even hiding desperation - benching Tavares the other night for a period. Just anoint one of the bench coaches for the rest of the season, & get on with things hammering defensive zone play. Matthews if he hits 70 goals & misses the playoffs would be a very bad look.
Patrick Roy now HC of the Islanders. Should be fascinating, they're in the playoff chase.
Oilers win 13th in a row now, record for a Canadian team. Penguins' 17 games is the NHL record.
Habs let in 9 goals, so that's a positive.

Wow... Leafs beating the best team in the NHL Jets 1-0 feels like they pitched a no-hitter.

Wow... Leafs beating the best team in the NHL Jets 1-0 feels like they pitched a no-hitter. Sweep the Jets home & home, & Toronto media has nothing today... such is the Leafs. Auston Matthews 40th goal, Jan 27th... with it the fastest Leaf in history to 600 points.

Well, looks like Salt Lake City, Utah is fast tracking its way into the NHL, come hell or high water.
I truly hope they just relocate the Coyotes once & for all, & not expand yet another team into this league. There's only so many star players to go around, let alone capable goalies. There's no real team from the Pacific division to realign out for them... best they'd have is a Colorado rival in the Central. At least the Arizona experiment they can't say the NHL never tried - they've bent over backwards including tiny arena just to keep them alive.

NHL players heading back to the Winter Olympics - 2026 & 2030. Italy already hosting the former, & likely Salt Lake City the latter - i.e. safe locations to guarantee participation. 2025 NHL '4 Nations Face-Off' USA, Canada, Sweden, & Finland... 7 games over 9 days.

Matthews on pace for 71 goals, first 70+ since 1992-93.
ESPN didn't feel it was important to say who did it then. I guessed Selanne.
Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selänne with 76

Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selänne with 76 What's not hurting his chances is the Leafs aren't on cruise control this season for the playoffs. They'll very likely get in, yet need to show up every night to get there. btw, the Rielly 5 games... should've been 8 I thought. Cross checking a defenseless player after a whistle, with the game already over, + if it matters, they don't meet again until next season now, so added cheap shot there. That incident just cannot be a normal 'code' thing. The slapshot didn't physically threaten a single Leafs player. There were 4 seconds remaining with a puck drop, they could've had a fairer shove fest there.

League likes fights and unwritten rules and any extra punishment would seem as if they are starting to crack down. With baseball going more "let 'em play" for showboating, basketball rarely with fights, and football penalizing taunting, hockey is a holdout.

For context, I'm not certain mainstream coverage of the incident has been fully framed. Whenever the Leafs visit the Senators, regular season, it's often the case as was that evening, nearly half if not more that arena is Leafs fans, loud - cheaper to drive there & go, than to walk downtown here & pay a mortgage for a seat. The Sens player was slapping the shot more at the visiting fans in his building than at any Leafs player. I dunno, letting the jackass validate himself with a garbage empty netter slapshot without incident would've been the better move.

Career plus/minus. Marchand active leader. McCrimmon HOF? Not for me no. Marchand on that list, yet not Crosby is a thing. Empty netters, I don't think they were pulling goalies late in the older days. Some argue that teams should pull goalies even earlier, if they're down 5-3, what difference does it make 2 minutes or 5, you can give yourself a virtual power-play with the game nearly already in hand.
