He performed a couple of days ago at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He came on stage assisted by a walking stick and occupied a chair throughout the concert. I mean, I've read somewhere that the fellow is reported to have a $300m+ fortune, so I wouldn't imagine he's hard up for a bob or two. At one point during the show he told the audience "I missed ya", so perhaps after 13 years of not playing London he really just wanted to get up there and knock out a few tunes for his own pleasure. I've never been a fan of his or Genesis and can count on one hand the tunes of his/theirs that I'd call very good ('Turn It On Again' anyone? 'Both Sides of the Story'? 'Jesus, He Loves Me'? - well, that's me lot, I'm afraid) But I was quite saddened by this performance of 'Against All Odds' - the opening number on the set-list on Sunday. The fellow has not been in the best of health and it's been ages since he's been through the demands of touring etc, and it's more power to him for getting up there and doing it and all that, but I just found it pretty sad - not he himself, or the fact that he's knocking on in age and is physically frail - no, it's sad that the voice, though still as recognizable and individual as ever, seems to have deserted him in part (the choruses here) which is to be expected, I know. But it makes for uneasy listening at times, do you think? Or not? That said, I reckon he'll grow in strength the more shows he does. There's no way round it, like him or not, the guy has had a remarkable career, and I do in fact wish him all the best with his tour. It's his son playing drums on this tour, by the way.

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Hasn't quite got the ooomph in his voice that he once had, but it isn't terrible. Would need to compare it to his live recordings in the past rather than his studio recording to gauge how much his voice has gone, but this video is pretty low quality audio, I thought it was alright though. I think your post primed me to expect something really bad. If your post had read "Phil Collins is better than ever" then I probably would have thought it was bad. Slightly out of tune in places.
But if you want to hear bad, you should hear me sing. That's bad.

By writing a bunch of radio friendly hits? He may not have changed music, and there probably aren't too many artists who would cite Phil Collins as an influence, but you gotta respect his talent, if it was easy to write hits everyone would be doing it! He is a big Tory though, but I'll try not to hold that against him.

I was A MASSIVE fan of him, f*** yall, lol.
Honestly, he SAVED Genesis. He wrote friendly hits, and I saw a documentary, and his band mates seemed jealous. One said,"We wanted him to do big (on his own) BUT not that big."
Genesis had one album at the end without Phil, remember how great that was, no, yea, no one else does either. Collins wrote them so many hits. He did a great solo career. I went to two concerts of his as a child, I loved him as a kid. Ill always have respect for him.

He is just an ultimate legend that many in the states never got.
They got Elton John and the various others of similar stature - But bar more of a cult Genesis and Pcollins following he isnt as big as he should be imo..
Maybe its just the sound and or lyrics does not translate.
My mate loves him for his lyrics - it reminds of him and his mum and his girlfriends - To me its more about the melody i suppose and his vast ability i suppose. Not that ability is something that is required (or my requirements ) - I mean I would take many bands over Led zeplein - yet they were the tightest band off all time.
Sometimes we connect with bands lyrics and because of that we think they are better(until you wise up) - they are not necessarily better or worse - they just connect with you - just like other great artists can relate to others in the same exact way.
He is a legend - I didn't see it so i don't know if it was sad or not. It sounds sad.
