She is brilliant...just absolutely brilliant. As a Caucasian, I will never understand what it is like to be African American. She has portrayed her experience in such a transcendent way with her writing, it really gave me a window to what it meant to grow up black in America. I have a hard time reading about the holocaust (or watching movies/TV about it), but I know how important it is that we not forget such an important event in history. Every book I've read about it absolutely haunts me, though.

That's why I can only imagine how amazed she and many other older blacks who'd been through Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement were when President Obama was elected. To go from having to step off the sidewalk when a white person walked by to a black man becoming the President of the United States is really something!
Same here. I read Elie Wiesel's book Night in high school and it's stayed with me ever since.

Yeah, regardless of how one might have felt about Obama politically, it was very exciting to see a black president. I can't imagine how people who lived through segregation felt seeing him take office. Maya has written some of my favorite poetry.

Great choices. I love Still I Rise, but it's the first time I've read When I Say I am a Christian. Thanks for sharing it, Marilyn.
BTW, I just found this interview over the weekend and thought I'd share it with you...
