Not because they were bad, but because their team would be too shrimpy to compete with today's teams! They only had one lineman over 300 lbs. (William "The Refrigerator" Perry, who was massive at 335 lbs.), and the next biggest guy on the roster was left guard Mark Bortz, who was a scant 282 lbs.! By comparison, the worst team in the NFL last season, the Cleveland Browns, had an entire offensive line of 300+ pounders. They could probably just out-muscle the '85 Bears and win 9 times out of 10.

you are gonna get bitched at my nostalgia freaks. if you suggest a great team a long time ago couldn't compete today people will hate you. everyone thinks the 96 bulls would beat the warriors today because "yeah man jordan and space jam!'

This has always been obvious to anyone with a brain.
The 85 Bears would dominate the 75 Steelers.
The 75 Steelers would dominate the 65 Packers.
The 65 Packers would dominate the 55 Browns.
The 55 Browns would dominate the 45 Bears.

They could probably just out-muscle the '85 Bears and win 9 times out of 10. this is interesting - you hear this talk in the NBA all the time - rarely MLB, NFL, NHL. i think they'd still dominate to an extent (i.e. 14-2) but how do you think they'd do if they ran across the Pats Dynasty of the past decade or so? (ironic they were the ones they whipped in the SB) |

It is amazing how much bigger players are now. Nearly every power 5 school has a few 300 lb lineman. Fridge Perry was gigantic compared to other players in 85. But yeah, people nowadays are totally not on steroids.  |

Better conditioning aside, going back and bringing any of those teams from the past forward to today and giving them a week to practice for a game against a 2017 team, they would still have a load of problems with how much the rules have changed.
I picture the 60's Packers, 70's Steelers, and 85 Bears getting flagged out of the building for roughing, clipping, clotheslining, helmet to helmet shots and late hitting. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, so I don't know how long it would take for the old school guys to be brought up to speed. Hell, the teams today have enough problems with the latest rule book!
Vince Lombardi would probably have given himself a stroke before the end of the first quarter bitching out the referees for every flag against the 60's Packers in 2017.

In any time-travel matchup, you have to effectively find a middle ground for the rules for both teams and give both teams time to prepare. You'd have to negotiate between the teams. OK, defenseless receiver rule, but no 5 yards contact. Jordan's Bulls vs Warriors would have hand checking but not the rougher rules. In baseball vs the 27 Yanks, you've had many rule, strike zone, mound height changes, and even the walls are padded now. |

This is one of the reasons I have lost interest in football. It takes a really huge man to weigh more than 270 lbs and be all muscle. Look at LeBron James. He is 6'8" and is listed at 250 lbs. He looks more like 260-265 to me and he is huge compared to other NBA players. Look at him stand next to players that are similar in height to him. I grew up in San Diego. When I was a child Ernie Ladd played for the Chargers. I was born in 1960 so I was just a kid when he played in the 60's. The biggest man in football at 6'9" and 315 lbs. One of the very few 300 plus pounders in football at that time. He had no fat either he was just huge all over. Linemen today are big and fat. Having a large stomach helps you when you are driving forward to push an opponent back. That additional 50 lbs. around your gut gives you more mass driving forward over a short distance. It is definitely unhealthy. |

Quite the jump from 1985 to 1993

2017 Rutgers - 304
An Offensive Lineman from the Mighty Bears averaged 40 lbs less than a lineman from a bottom shelf Power 5 team.
