Season 3.
The cast was never better, it has the best villain and the tensions between Buffy, Faith, Giles and Angel really keep things simmering along.

I'm torn between S3 and S5 as my favourites. Much as I enjoyed the final two seasons, the Season 5 finale "The Gift" would have been a powerful (and daring) way of concluding the series.

Season 1. It was much the funniest.

Season 2 - The mythologically epic season of romantic and personal tragedy. It's more than just the obvious who lose their innocence, even those who seem the least innocent, and the most obvious one realizes she's still quite innocent compared to the things about to come. Characters in the season are often victims to events out of their control due to not having all the necessary information, not wanting to hurt someone they love but ultimately hurting that person because of it and they must learn to forgive themselves most of all.

I've got to go with Season 5. To start with, it only had a handful of epiodes -- much better than most seasons -- which I would consider weak. Glory was one of the most interesting Big Bads and the fight against her was very engaging. Loyalties were both tested and strengthened throughout the season. Tara became one of the Scoobies and in the same season was nearly lost. The season included the classic episode, "The Body" which was both a landmark episode and a major game-changer in the direction the series was to take. Buffy's final sacrifice was a moment I will never forget. And finally, "Buffy vs. Dracula" ended in the most orignal and spectacular cliff-hangers I have ever seen, and while I normally hate cliff-hangers, that one truly impressed me.

Season 2. It's definitely my most watched season as well. It has my favorite villains (Angelus, Spike, and Drusilla), and it has a lot of my favorite episodes. I even enjoy most of the MOTW episodes in this season.

Gotta go with season 2, though I do think Season 3 was consistently better.

Season 2, I think, has always been my favorite -- with seasons 3 and 1 following closely.

AnythonyRocks huh? Are you TomRocks' brother?
My favourite is another tie between Season 2 and 3. I love both series too much to say one over the other.

Season 3 for me, but I do love season 2 as well. Season 3 overall was very well done and consistent. Very few, if any, dull episodes. The villains were more personal (of course not as personal as Angelus) and sympathetic yet still very much villains; I still adore Faith and the Mayor. I like the metaphor of high school being hell and they survived it as Oz said in the finale. This is my favorite cast (although I do love some of the later additions like Spike, Anya, and Tara). Just a really good, solid season that I keep going back to over and over. I think my only 2 complaints about the season are the Willow/Xander romance for 4 episodes (all of which I love). I understand that the writers wanted to acknowledge it since they had sort of established it in the previous 2 seasons, but it just came off very badly and random, in my opinion. And that we only have one episode of Spike, lol. I would have liked to see more of him in the season, not to mention Dru and Darla as well.

Season 3, no question. It was pretty close to a 'perfect' season for me (there were only three eps in the entire season which I wasn't fond of). I liked all the regular characters this season, it had my favourite opening credits, it introduced my favourite character (Faith), had the great Mayor/Faith 'father/daughter'-like relationship, had my most favourite episodes of any season and my favourite season final.
I always separate the show's first three seasons from the later ones (which had some good episodes here and there, but I never found another season as consistently excellent as Season 3).
Runner-up would be Season 2.
