From the article:
Ah, so it's a ratings grab with a younger demo.
Why not just combine the X Games with the Olympics? Anyone else miss street luge?

Well, in a sense I guess it does show that basketball has become global, but like you I think it's nonsense. Only a few years ago they were eliminating sports like wrestling. A sport that has been included since the Olympics inception.
I agree with Rey, why not just ask the X Games to merge.

I didn't even know that 3-on-3 basketball was a thing. Is it an organised sport? Are there leagues anywhere in the world that play this format? How different is it from regular basketball? Sounds like a stupid decision to me. I guess the most obvious comparison as far as Olympic sports are concerned is with Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, but those two really are very different, and not only in the number of players (6 and 2, respectively).

Apparently there's something called the FIBA 3x3 World Cup which is supposed to be the highest level of the sport. I am only aware of the Gus Macker Tournament here in the U. S., which is 3x3, but is an amateur competition.

I'm adamantly against the having BMX in the Olympics. I don't like having a motorized event in the Olympics. I don't think the BMX stuff is motorized. Just freestyle stunts on street bicycles. I didn't realize they had added skateboarding, surfing and climbing to the games as well. In other ratings-related moves, they've removed a lot of the weightlifting slots and added more swimming. Both are equally boring if you ask me; I guess I find swimming slightly more compelling because I'm American and we have a ton of great swimmers, so at least I have someone to root for in all the races. I was into skating and freestyling a bit when I was a kid so it won't be torture for me to watch even though they'll definitely seem out of place. But climbing sounds like it could run opposite 'Olympic wet paint watching' and I'd have to flip a coin. I'm somewhat of an Olympics junkie (despite understanding the entire process is corrupt and the cities that host the games are ultimately doomed financially unless they were powerhouses to begin with), so I'll watch whatever they throw on for two weeks. I'm just going to have to accept change.

I think they should do a better job of promoting some of the less popular sports, like sabre fencing and wrestling.

That's why I'm surprised by a niche sport like sport climbing's inclusion in the games. Not sure how you promote that to general audiences. Why not just have an obstacle course like American Ninja Warrior and give out Olympic medals? That actually sounds more fun to watch than straight up climbing.

When will do have Gladiator fights, horse races like in the old Rome, Jousting, Rollerball, a true Battle Royal, or Hunger Games.
In Running man we were promised blood by 2017.

IOC's decisions on what to include or exclude rarely involve logic or sense.

There will also be mixed relay events in track-and-field and swimming. I like that.
