She was one of our most remarkable actresses who almost always gave superb performances, though it's certainly true that she didn't always have her choice of the best of films.
Despite that, she was nominated for 8 Oscars, finally winning Best Actress for The Trip to Bountiful (1985).
My favorites of her performances are The Trip to Bountiful, Summer and Smoke, Toys in the Attic, Interiors, and her role opposite John Wayne in her feature film debut in Hondo.
Hondo (1953)
Summer and Smoke (1962)
Sweet Bird of Youth (1963)
Toys in the Attic (1963)
Interiors (1978)
The Trip to Bountiful (1985)
I wanted to like her more in Sweet Bird of Youth, but I felt somehow that she was a bit miscast (maybe I'd have felt differently if I'd seen her in the Broadway version directed by Elia Kazan, whose ability with actors far exceeded that of Richard Brooks). And I would have loved to have seen her on Broadway in The Immoralist, playing opposite Louis Jourdan and especially James Dean (hanging out with him below).
She was a great talent without question. Your thoughts, comments, favorite films?

The Trip to Bountiful 1985 wonderful movie unfairly compared to Driving mrs Daisy, It's so sad she passed away within a year of her Oscar.
She was the best co-star John Wayne had in Hondo 1953
She also had a lovely role in a Glenn Ford movie called Dear Heart 1964

Hondo / Shane A+++ westerns. Both with little kids who did terrific jobs. Both had outstanding female leads. Both had heroic loners. Hondo had a dog, Shane did not .

'The Beguiled' (1971) is one of my favourite Don Siegel movies. Sofia Coppola's just picked up the Best Director Award at Cannes for her remake of the movie; Geraldine Page appeared for Sofia's father Francis Coppola in 'You're A Big Boy Now' (1966).
Page is also in 'What Ever Happened To Aunt Alice?' (1969) which is produced by Robert Aldrich and directed by Lee Katzin. Then there's 'The Bride' (1985), Franc Roddam's horror with Sting from the Police!
I find Stuart Rosenberg's movie 'The Pope Of Greenwich Village' (1984) interesting and it features lots of strong character actors. Speaking of strong attractions, there's also 'Honky Tonk Freeway' (1981) in which Geraldine Page of Kirksville, Missouri and David Rasche of St Louis, Missouri join Ohioans Beverly D'Angelo and Teri Garr for some fun on the freeway.

I liked Ms. Page a great deal. My favorite movies of hers are:
Hondo (1953) Summer and Smoke (1961) Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) Toys in the Attic (1963) You're a Big Boy Now (1966) What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969) The Beguiled (1971) The Day of the Locust (1975) Nasty Habits (1977) Interiors (1978) The Trip to Bountiful (1985)
Plus I have to mention one of her Night Gallery TV episodes. Sins of the Fathers.

teleadm , yes, she did have a lovely role in Dear Heart, and she and Glenn Ford were a great team. And I'm glad to see another Trip to Bountiful Fan. She was quite wonderful in that. As for Hondo, well she obviously has lots of fans there. And what an interesting teaming with John Wayne in that one. I haven't seen it in decades and would I'd love to see it again. I read up a little about her casting in Hondo, she replaced Katherine Hepburn, not because Kate droped out, but because the role had been written smaller than originally intended, so it was a mutual understanding between Wayne and Kate, and that they should find a project together later instead (it actually took until 1976). Geraldine Page was a last minute replacement. A recomendation from someone who had seen her in one of her early TV roles. Geraldine Page was during the shooting of Hondo appalled and shocked by John Wayne and company's polititcal views. Geraldine Page didn't have "fotogenic" teeths, and John Wayne actually payed for her to have a dental operation/fixation. John Wayne liked to work with theater actors, because he liked their professionalism, and how they always knew their lines, they never screwed up scenes, how they could sink in to their roles and so on.

She seemed to be a very well respected actress, who finally won her Oscar and win over some new fans, only to pass away suddenly.
Her role in The Trip to Bountiful evoked so many feelings of longing, nostalgia and sadness, she played that part masterfully.
I really want to see Hondo, caught some of it on TV recently.
My list of Geraldine Page movies I've seen up to this point: Sweet Bird of Youth The Beguiled I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can The Pope of Greenwich Village Village The Bride White Nights The Trip to Bountiful Native Son

She has 30 movie credits (excluding her TV work). I have seen a grand total of three of her films: Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) - she was good in that The Day of the Locust (1975) - I don't remember her, just the cross-eyed chick Honky Tonk Freeway (1981) - I don't remember her, but I should think anyone in that stinker would be only too grateful for their participation to be obliterated from the memory. I know John Schlesinger's output was very variable in his later years, but really ... Obviously I never got to see her US TV or live theater performances, so it looks like I have missed out.

Yes, she wasn't a prolific film actress - not your usual star type, but too good just to be a supporting actress.
And for the record, she originated these roles on Broadway that were later filmed (in all but one case without her), which I think further bespeak her enormous talent:
Agnes of God - the Anne Bancroft character
Sweet Bird of Youth - as Princess Kosmonopolis, directed by Elia Kazan, which she got to do on screen under the direction of Richard Brooks
Separate Tables - the Rita Hayworth character
The Rainmaker - the Katherine Hepburn character

I have seen a grand total of three of her films: Can I boost my miserable total by including the films she made under her aliases Geneviève Page and Geraldine Fitzgerald, because on checking I find that I have actually seen more films including each of them than with the actress IMDb calls "one of the greatest American actresses of all time". Must be something wrong with my selection process.

What was that? Geraldine Page's failed screen-test for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"?

And btw, I forgot to include in my OP that she was nominated for 8 Oscars, including the one she finally won for The Trip to Bountiful. Gotta fix that.

spiderwort I watch it every Holiday Season … a Beta Tape from when it was first shown. Not the best copy but that's part of the nostalgia of it all.
