In retrospect, I really liked the paranormal angle of Crystal Skull (at least it was different). And they could have done something interesting with that. Like if they combined it with the emergence of New Age movements and (as much as I loathe the subject) the ancient astronauts proponents.

Indy finds a parallel universe with a different Earth where his arch-nemesis Nazis won the war. I would watch it! Maybe in this one, he died, Marion became a spy against Hitler & co., and various friends of his from previous movies have all joined Marion's underground. Imagine their surprise when Indy shows up- alive and telling wild tales of a world where the Allies beat the Axis powers.

There's lots of good ideas. Among the undeveloped ones, I like the Hephaestus Hammer idea. As I mentioned before TSR Hobbies had an Indiana Jones module and their guidebook had a list of possible treasure quests. There was also a series of Find Your Fate Indiana Jones novels.
Indiana Jones and the Curse of Horror Island (June 1984) – R. L. Stine Indiana Jones and the Lost Treasure of Sheba (June 1984) – Rose Estes Indiana Jones and the Giants of the Silver Tower (Aug 1984) – R. L. Stine Indiana Jones and the Eye of the Fates (Aug 1984) – Richard Wenk Indiana Jones and the Cup of the Vampire (Oct 1984) – Andy Helfer Indiana Jones and the Legion of Death (Dec 1984) – Richard Wenk Indiana Jones and the Cult of the Mummy's Crypt (Feb 1985) – R. L. Stine Indiana Jones and the Dragon of Vengeance (Apr 1985) – Megan Stine and H. William Stine Indiana Jones and the Gold of Genghis Khan (May 1985) – Ellen Weiss Indiana Jones and the Ape Slaves of Howling Island (1986) – R. L. Stine Indiana Jones and the Mask of the Elephant (Feb 1987) – Megan Stine and H. William Stine
"King Solomon's magic ring which enables its user to control demons (which are referred to as djinn in the story)."
**This one seems like the most potential to match the Ark in terms of a visually interesting supernatural treasure. I know there are a couple of Arabian Nights or Sinbad-type novels which use that treasure quest. The Voyage of Azzam is one I think. There is a related legend, called the Shamir I believe, a jewel in the center of the ring which was taken by a bird called the Moor Hen. I remember that story from the Enchanted World Time-Life book series.

If it hadn't been done already, Indy finds an artifact that proves Jesus was married and had children. They could go for the cup that held the oil used on his body, by the Marys, and if it is found in France - that could further support one of the theories that Mary M. came to France after Jesus's ascension to Heaven? Slightly more subtle than some of the DiVinci code stuff, plus leaves more room for them to play with for plot purposes?

I’m reading a fun book right now called Tales Told in the Shadows of the White Mountains, a New Hampshire-centered collection of folktales and ghost-stories, and there’s reference to “the Great Carbuncle,” about which Hawthorne wrote in his story of the same name. It’s a genuine White Mountain legend, referring to a huge and beautiful gem belonging to the Cowasuck Indians that could light up the sky—but also make seekers after it go mad. Anyway, the idea of searching after this long-lost artifact struck me as Indy-esque—and, if it wouldn’t work as a McGuffin for the entire movie, it’d be a nice one for the introduction/teaser, like the Fertility Idol or the Cross of Coronado. It’d also give Indy a chance to explore North American legend—which I think he’s only really done in Young Indy’s “Mystery of the Blues” Ford cameos (which also involved American Indians). ________________________________________________ There’s a guy at the Raven who had an excellent suggestion for using the Shroud of Turin as an Indy artifact (even if again only for the introduction), something I thought would never work because there’s no real mystery surrounding its whereabouts. But “Moeded” there didn’t let this difficulty stop him, and I quite liked his concept: I guess that that’d have to be a flashback now if it were in a movie (with some other actor playing a younger Ford—not sure how that’d work, but the idea’s good).

Any McGuffin will do for him to search for. There's tons left to explore. What this franchise really thrives on is the sense of adventure and the action sequences where Indy cleverly gets out of every cliffhanging trap set up for him.
Problem is, now that Harrison Ford is so much older he's going to have at least SHARE in the action scenes, right? So which character can he share that with? I would have thought give Indiana a SON! Well, they gave him a son and it was SHIA LEBOUF! I wouldn't go down that road again.
So a new character? Maybe a student of his who needs his help? Over the years he must have had lots of students he liked and whom he inspired to become archaeologists. One of these guys goes on an search for some McGuffin, gets in over his head, and calls on Indy to come help him.
Better yet, just re-cast Harrison Ford with Chris Pratt and make another adventure of his early years! lol

It worked out fine for the Mummy movies for a while.

I just found an interesting possible McGuffin that would simultaneously address the point Primemovermithrax Pejorative raised about an Islamic relic and would bring Indy to the Arctic. You could also throw in the hollow earth “theory,” the Garden of Eden, and/or Shangri-la. Mount Qaf is an old Zoroastrian Iranian legend that was brought into Islam and associated with the North Pole. Also associated in Christianity with Dante’s “Mount Purgatory” and with the mysterious medieval phantom island “ Rupes Nigra.”

It'd be kind of cool if they brought back Short Round and he was played by John Cho. In expanded material, he becomes an archaeologist like his mentor.

I've often wished the Shortround character would come back as an adult. That's kinda "duh" in my opinion. I wonder why they haven't done it already.

Better yet, just re-cast Harrison Ford with Chris Pratt and make another adventure of his early years! lol That was one of the ideas I thought would be cool, for it to be someone he knew through the school. Or, alternately, someone related to one of his friends/mentors/whathaveyou. Technically, Marion knew him through her father, and Indy got into his line of work through his own father- whom everyone seems to be familiar with at least the work of, so we've got the groundwork there for this idea of legacy and that this adventures-who-are-also-history-nerds tends to be a family thing that's in the blood. Sullah and Brody, as far as we know, don't have relatives who got into that --- so I always thought it'd be cool if one of Sullah's kids (I'd prefer daughter, but son could work) or a nephew of Brody's, had come to Indy's school, been sort of a protege or star pupil, and then when the new movie takes place, they throw up the Batsignal of sorts to let him know they need his help. If it were Brody's nephew, you could have it that Brody had a brother that went a less academic route in life, was more of an adventurer and ended up dying in some skirmish somewhere after WWII ended, and Brody got his nephew into the college where he and Indy teach. Being a relative, he could get in cheaper and Brody could keep an eye on him for the kid's mother's peace of mind, plus give them a chance to get to know each other since presumably the kid didn't spend much time in the USA with such a travelin' father. Then there could be all this stuff about how the kid makes comments about how sometimes Brody said he was too much like his dad, and when his temper gets the better of him or he doesn't stop to think, he'll comment, "Uncle Marcus always did say I'd end up just like my dad" - but Indy keeps seeing bits of Brody there, the playful nature, the near-constant smile on the kid's face, and maybe even comments that there's a lot of Marcus in there, at some point during their adventure. And, of course, you can have a girl who serves as a bit of a complication since the nephew gets so easily distracted and Sullah looks at Indy's eyerolls and chuckles, "Don't you remember being young, my friend?" If they go the way of Sullah's daughter, imagine that! She's at Indy's school because when she announced to the family that she wanted to go to America and study (I'm thinking she didn't want to study history - maybe she wanted to study Engineering or something), Sullah basically called Indy and was like, "If I send my girl there, will you keep an eye on her for me?", and Indy was like, "Of course, but honestly Sullah, any boy messes with her and he's going to pull back a broken stump. I've seen what you've taught those kids to do. I'd be more afraid of her than any punk who messed with her." Then, something happens on a dig site where Sullah & Sons were working, and she gets word, so she basically insists on going with Indy. He tries to get in the way and she tells him straight up, "My family, my job. You can let me come with you or you can race me, either way I'm going." Then we get to see her doing more MacGyver-ish stuff while Indy does things his way, and they both save the day (And Sullah, cause there is NO KILLING SULLAH! Don't even think it, Disney!), and if they need- they can have a romance subplot with her and another student from the school or someone she left behind.
