Is this possibly the worst special FX and backgrounds for any movie ever made?

It has a campiness I can appreciate but ehh. I could never get into it. Especially seeing as how much I loved the first movie.

John Carpenter dislikes both Hollywood & sequels but the money was just too good. Escape from L.A. is basically a campy remake of the original with huge amounts of political & entertainment industry satire added. It's not a great movie but I appreciate Carpenter for doing it his way instead of trying to just repeat the original, which is what both fans & the studio probably would have preferred. Also it has one of the best endings ever.
Some backgrounds look intentionally fake - few miniature buildings even have "miniature" written on them for god's sake. Others probably look fake just because around the time this was made Carpenter was slowly losing his touch. None of his 90s work or later is really great, though I enjoy some of them for different reasons.

They're far from the worse effects I've seen, but they're quite crude.

I hated it. 'Escape from New York' is one of my all-time favorite movies, so when L.A. came out I had very high hopes. Oh brother, talk about a disappointment.

I always thought the effects were deliberately poor to feed the purposely campy feel of the movie.

it was entertaining. the original was obviously better, but LA had Bruce Campbell as the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills...

Is this possibly the worst special FX and backgrounds for any movie ever made? Mortal Kombat: Annihilation has the worst cgi of any theatrical release ever. Also, Escape from L.A. >>> Escape from New York. The part with the people of Beverly Hills that need to keep getting plastic surgery in order to survive is hilarious and awesome.

I always thought the effects were deliberately poor to feed the purposely campy feel of the movie. Maybe so. Carpenter is a competent guy. I can't see him signing off on this without knowing it looked so terrible.

Same FX company that did the CGI for The Phantom (1996), I believe.

It's been ages since I watched it. I don't recall fx being an issue, though.

I can't see him signing off on this without knowing it looked so terrible. I remember reading an interview with Carpenter where he said something like how Escape From New York was a product of its time and Escape From L.A. is superior in every way. This was not an advertising interview from the time L.A. was released but a much more recent one, Carpenter pretty much looking back to his career. In the Mouth of Madness has some really fake looking effects too. Not sure if it's intentional but the movie is about lines between reality & fiction being increasingly blurred so it kinda fits the theme there too.
