I always thought the effects were deliberately poor to feed the purposely campy feel of the movie. Maybe so. Carpenter is a competent guy. I can't see him signing off on this without knowing it looked so terrible. Originally, the idea for a sequel was to do a much larger budgeted movie, Escape From Earth, but he could not get approval. Instead he came up with a smaller lower budget sequel, Escape From L.A., and if it did well enough the studio would fund his larger project. It didn't and Escape From Earth will apparently probably never happen.

I've thought that Escape From Earth was always supposed to be part 3 while L.A. was always going to be part 2. Escape From L.A. was big budget for its time, about the same as Stallone's Demolition Man for example. The effects were not cheaply made like some suspect. Escape From Mars, another Plissken script that never got into production, was reworked into Ghosts of Mars.

It's a painfully bad movie. It's so stupid and poorly written it's an insult to fans of Escape From New York. Excusing this pile of garbage by claiming it's supposed to be campy and bad is a cop out.
Carpenter should be ashamed.

It's pretty bad. Then again what film from the dawn of CGI everything holds up well now?

I though he said that on the commentary track, but since it's been several, maybe 10 years since I've heard it, I doubt it. Thanks for clarification. Either way, I'd love a 3rd Snake film!

the anime sequel project(s) didn't look that good. all the characters looked lame. some of the comic books were good.

some of the comic books were good. Which ones would you recommend? I've been thinking of buying some of them.

some of the comic books were good. Which ones would you recommend? I've been thinking of buying some of them. there was the adventures of snake plissken that came out shortly after escape from la, it was ok, i was really into the world of snake back then so i adored it at the time. the series didn't last long. then there was a 4 part snake plissken chronicles it took place inbetween the both films, i liked it. the one's that came out after that i never continued reading but will probably look for them on amazon or somewhere.
