"In recent interviews , filmmaker Neil Blomkamp hasn’t really hidden his frustration with the current Hollywood paradigm . After bursting onto the scene with 'District 9' Blomkamp has had a bit of a rocky go of it , with his films underperforming . The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back came with the release of his film 'Chappie' . That film was released to poor reviews and low box office . Then came the drama surrounding a proposed 'Alien' sequel . Well , now he’s decided to take matters into his own hands with Oats Studios , and the first short film from the studio 'Rakka' .
Oats Studios is Blomkamp’s response to the traditional Hollywood model . Through his own studio , he will help produce short films that will be released to audiences , with the hopes that some will catch on and become viral hits , leading towards enough money to create larger feature films . The first release is a short called 'Rakka' and after you hear the descriptions , it’s obvious that this came from Blomkamp .
'Rakka' tells the story of what happens after the aliens have invaded Earth . In 2020 , aliens have completely taken over the planet and enslaved the human race , altering the Earth’s atmosphere . The film is experimental in that it is told through various points of voice and not just a single narrative . The short is available to view for free on Steam and YouTube . While viewers are familiar with YouTube , they may not be as familiar with Steam , but that’s where all the excitement happens for Oats Studios .
After watching the short film , Blomkamp and Oats Studios hope you go to the Steam page to download “assets” . Those assets include the behind the scenes stuff that would normally be on a Blu-ray but are now available to download.. all for the low price that is . They hope that enough people will support the film by purchasing these assets , which would lead to funds to create more content . Blomkamp hopes his unique voice and ideas are enough to create a new paradigm for releasing these high-concept sci-fi films .
No matter how successful 'Rakka' ends up , Blomkamp is doing this on his own terms , so hopefully , this leads to more exciting ideas down the line ."

This guy doesn't excite me at all. I didn't even like District 9, which is universally thought to be his best work. He's all style and no substance. His movies bore me.
I think it is very weak of him to try to claim that all his troubles have been because of "how Hollywood makes movies".

I didnt care for his work either. His short films were well done in terms of FX but I think he was pushed into feature films when he was not suited for it.
On the other hand he is right that Hollywood is messed up. An alternative to it, without the propaganda message filter, would be great, but it has to have a distribution stream that can draw people and money consistently.

Interesting Comments Guys ! I actually liked District 9 a lot ! I will have to have a look at Chappie which has generally positive comments about online . It seemed strange to me to tie in with Steam , but maybe that's the direction he wants to go ? Peter Jackson first noticed him , and he helped him out extensively with his company . I could see Syfy being interested in hiring him though ?!

I liked Rakka, but it is horribly grim and depressing. I'd be interested to see more, though.

I liked District 9 and was excited to see more from Blomkamp. Then I saw more from Blomkamp. Elysium was underwhelming and boring with heavy handed social commentary jammed into every inch of the tired story. Nothing like millionaires preaching to an audience about how awful it is to be poor. As lackluster as his second film was, Blomkamp really shit the bed with his next film.
Chappie was excruciatingly bad. A truly awful movie with one of the most annoying robots it's been my displeasure to watch. Sadly most of the characters were even worse than the moronic hood rat robot excuse me hood rabbit robot. A hood rabbot if you will. That pun although admit-ably poor is still more clever than anything in the steaming pile of dung that is Chappie.
Blomkamp's movies look good but the scripts, dialogue and characters are garbage now. Instead of whining about the traditional Hollywood model maybe Neill should make another decent movie. I wonder if Blomkamp sees the hypocrisy in asking those less fortunate than himself to pay for behind the scenes stuff so he can make another movie about the rich taking advantage of the poor?

After watching Rakka (with Sigourney Weaver) and Zygote (with Dakota Fanning) i really wish Alien 5 had not been cancelled.

Speaking of Dakota Fanning, does she do any good movies as an adult? Seems like her sister gets the high profile stuff while she is doing arthouse.

Blomkamp is a one trick pony. Glad to see him out of work in Hollywood

I have been trying to get round to see Chappie , but haven't yet ! But I have seen Elysium , and I have to say that I disagree with you on all points , Poelzig ! We may agree that most Hollywood Producers are the worst form of Sycophants on Earth , who are only capable of mimmicking great movies ! Wealth is relative , up to a point ! And I don't think Blomkamp is in the League of Scoundrels there ! I very much enjoyed Elysium and it's story , and I wouldn't be surprised if our Human History sadly actually ends like the movie ! Also the action/adventure played out very tightly with the poor revolutionaries desperately in battle with the Mercenaries led by nasty and efficient Kruger (Sharlto Copley) . I've heard Chappie is a similar story ! I will look forward to that !
