"You're the disease, and I'm the cure."Marion "Cobra" Cobretti (Sylvester Stallone) are the police's unofficial exterminator, as he always manages to get job done, no matter how dirty it is and his latest task is to use every means possible to wipe out and end the brutal and murdering regime set out by the new, sadistic leader of the New World Order, and who is only known by the name of The Night Slasher (Brian Thompson). But things take a sudden turn when a beautiful, young model gets involved through an accident, and Cobretti has to step in and make sure that the only living witness of seeing The Night Slasher stays alive for the next few hours, as they have unwillingly become The Night Slasher's top priority.Sly's best action film of the 80s, and certainly his most badass effort. As a kid The Night Slasher was frightening as hell, even though the whole "axe-clanking" part at their meetings was kind of silly, he was a much more scary looking villain than most of that era's horror movie baddies. Brian Thompson really did well on this one, and should have gotten more villain roles but I guess trying to top this one would be impossible. Sly is a mean son of a bitch as Lt. Marion Cobretti (has to be with a first name like that), and comes of as a bit of Dirty Harry and partly Paul Kersey, and all total badass, and that poster is obviously a little nod to The Terminator poster, (I love these 80s action poster). Brigitte Nielsen might not have been a great actress, (but who cares about that, right?) as the danish babe have never looked better than she does here. The whole movie oozes 1980s with neon lights, synthesizers, cheesy but awesome soundtrack and you even got some robots thrown in there too. Screw the critics, this is one great action film from the very start and up till the ending. You got fantastic car chases, action scenes, and Sly gunning down scum left to right to make sure that Cobra stands among as one of the best and most enjoyable action films of the 1980s.

Yeah, the scenes with him in the hospital, wearing those glasses, that is one psycho looking dude. It could have been a real good horror/slasher movie, at times it felt very much like one of the first Halloween movies, but then again I think it did more than OK as an action/thriller.

That was the aim, according to Stallone. The inspiration came from his observation that no one ever calls the cops in slasher movies.

Some many great lines of dialogue to chew on and plenty of stare downs. It was exciting seeing Stallone and Thompson coming to blows, but for me its the supermarket scene when they introduce Cobra that's the highlight.
BTW I enjoy coming across your threads/posts. I really like the enthusiastic writing style to your reviews.

pizza + scissors? who thought of that?
also, why didn't they use this as the archetype for the Stallone Judge Dredd movie? the world will never know.

Hopefully more 80s action fans will come along and discuss their favorites. Yeah, the supermarket scene sure was intense, probably one of the best scenes done in any of the Sly's 80s film. I just wish that Sly would have done a Cobra 2 back in the day, probably not even come close to the original, but still it would be a great ride. By the way, I really love the axe clanking scenes, (cheesy as hell I know) but come on, who would be crazy enough (beside maybe Cobra) to show up at their meetings without brining along an axe?

Yeah, instead of Brigitte we ended up with Rob Schneider. Btw, after watching this movie, I always use an scissor to slize up my pizza, it taste so much better that way.

One of Sly's most enjoyable movies. We would never have gotten this movie if Sly had agreed to do Beverly Hills Cop. Just imagine how he would have looked in that!

A solid action movie! I haven't seen it in a very long time, but I still remember most of the scenes. I remember the opening in the store being great, the awesome car chase and the ending at the motel/mill or something like that...
I don't wanna bash Cannon Films (they made some good stuff), but the quality of Cobra is far above what you would usually expect from Cannon IMO.
I should rewatch this movie again, I have it on VHS somewhere, but I might get the Stallone Blu-Ray collection, because I don't own any Stallone movies on Blu yet...

According to wikipedia, Cobra had a budget of somewhere among 25 million dollars, which compared to their far more usual b-movie action films, such as American Ninja or Missing in Action which were both lying around 1 million dollars. But the fact that it had such a big name like Sly attatched to it, probably had something to do with it.

He was terrifying in this movie. It is kind of impressive seeing how much he changed from the more goofy looking, wannabe hard-man in The Terminator (1984) and 2 years later comes off as almost being more menacing than even the Terminator. From the Wikipedia page: Thompson's athletic build and unique facial structure were key in the initial roles he was offered. He has stated that it has occasionally been a double-edged sword when it comes to auditioning for roles, but it has provided him with consistent work. Thompson said, "If you're very physical in stature, you're gonna get hired for action movies. The star's always going to be chasing someone so they need an equal adversary. I'm never going to play a nebbish geek." Well, he tried the geek approach though, but even with those heavy set Clark Kent glasses that the Night Slasher wore, it just made him look even more scary, and as were most guys of today would probably just come off like some weak ass hipster, this guy meant serious business.

I'm not sure you can say he tried the geek approach is one of his characters, who was attempting to disguise himself, wore glasses for five minutes. He was good enough in Cobra that this guy should've had a bigger career. He's a working actor, which is great for him, but this dude should've been the villain in so many action movies. He was wasted so much in Lionheart.

My bad attempt of making a an ever bader joke, but it is probably the only scene of him that I can remember wearing the classic "geek" glasses, and still a guy like Thompson would stick out like a sore thumb, everytime. Was about to mention Lionheart earlier, pretty damn solid Van Damme flick by the way, but yeah, I was very disappointed that a bad ass villain, or what seemed to be the main heavy henchman portrayed by Brian, was just wasted like that. A shame, because throughout the film, I remember him and Van Damme had a bit of going, and hoped that it would lead up to a good fight, instead all I can remember is Van Damme throwing a kick at Thompson while he sits with the audience, and that was it.

My bad, I didn't realize you were kidding. Those glasses did make him look psychotic. I think they make him look nuts because it looks like his character is trying to wear them as a disguise, but they can't contain the crazy. He looks like he's bursting at the seams and is completely failing and trying to look normal. I like that movie, but I do remember being disappointed he didn't have a face-off within Van Damme. I think I recognized him from Cobra the first time I saw it and simply assumed he would be some kind of goon or henchman. I remember him from those two movies, the X-Files, and an episode or two of Buffy, but this guy should have had a bigger career as a movie villain.

Did not know that he was in both X-Files and Buffy, that I have to check out. Brian reminds me a bit of Vernon Wells, well not by the looks but how he seems like the completely different guy than most people think off by seeing him in the movies.
In several interviews I have watched either on Youtube or on DVD, he comss off as a kind and very well spoken actor who seem to take pride in his work, and I would have love to see him get a part in The Expendables 4, (not that my expecations are too big as the last one was bit of a dud), still they should make more way and pay resepect for the great and awesome 80s-90s baddies like Brian and Vernon, because a movie is only as good as its villain, (well mostly).
