At my advanced age I had given up hope of royal honors, but I see there is still hope for me. I may yet become a Dame and posters here would have to kiss my ass!

She was born in Japan of British parents. And a number of non-Brits have been given "honorary" knighthoods--former NYC mayor Giuliani, for example.

I thought you had to be a British subject to become a member of the British empire. But you know she deserves it. Odd that in these politically correct times, the honor is still called "... of the British Empire". I think there still is one, but it no longer implies great prestige as the honor once would have done (at least, to those who were into that sort of thing).
