This is considered by many the birth of the modern superhero movie. Directed by Sam Raimi. Stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, and James Franco.
In my opinion, the action is well-done and the character moments are handled pretty good as well. 9/10 for me.

These movies all came before Spider-Man: Superman: The Movie Superman II Swamp Thing Superman III Supergirl Superman IV: The Quest for Peace Batman The Punisher (1989) Batman Returns Batman Forever Batman & Robin X-Men: The MovieSuperman: The Movie was really the beginning of the modern superhero movie era. Prior to Superman: The Movie, superhero movies consisted mainly of low-budget serial movies. Directed by Sam Raimi. Stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, and James Franco. It's definitely better than any of the crappy movies that MCU has made.

I haven't seen it in a while, but probably a 7.5. I voted for a 7/10.

The action is high-flying and juiced up, like all new comic book movies now.

Well, of the 12 movies that I listed above, some movies like Swamp Thing and The Punisher don't have high-flying, juiced-up action. But 1 movie on the list, Superman II, certainly has plenty of high-flying, juiced-up action. Superman and the 3 Kryptonians battling on the streets of Metropolis, that had as much high-flying, juiced-up action as many of the more recent CBMs.

5/10. Any true Spider-man film has to be grounded in the Ditko era (since he created the character) and it fails to be.
Maguire is too mousey/sleepy. They made Flash Thompson into an anonymous goon. They gave Mary Jane too much of a role, and had her living next door to Peter Parker for 10 years? Their bedroom windows were literally 10 inches away from each other and yet it all that time they never talked to each other? Absurd. Bad CGI effects. They changed the reasons for why he left the burglar get away. The Green Goblin looked like a Power Ranger. Pointless organic webshooters (I assume there was a legal reason they did that-but it was idiotic).
Real shame they didnt have the wrestling scene closer to the comic. An open air sequence would have been better than the cage environment, though Bruce Campbell enlivened things.
I think it needed to have more of the spirit of Dark Man, especially with him swinging around a real cityscape like Dark Man did.

Has gotten better with age. At one time I would said Spider-Man 2 was a much better film. Now I think the first one is better and the best Spider-Man film to date, though I have not yet watched any of the 70s Spider-Man films. And one of the very best superhero films, too. Some of the effects do look dated but only slightly. There was real chemistry between Maguire and Dunst. With Maguire they got it right immediately in the dual role. And Willem Dafoe makes a great Goblin. 9.5/10, round up to 10/10.

This is considered by many the birth of the modern superhero movie. No, yet it is a bridge of sorts from Superman, crossing over dark Batman & cerebral X-Men.

the leads could have been better cast. i never really forgave the look of the Goblin suit. but it does a meritorious job capturing the tone of the source material. i give it a 7/10. J.K. Simmons' portrayal of Jameson is alone almost enough to bump it up to 8.

Not a bad movie, but it never really worked well with Maguire as Spiderman, imo anyway. A 6 for me.

I think them casting tobey was the right way to go. I was getting tired of them casting heartthrobs as the superhero/hero/whatever.

7/10.
Green Goblin costume was awful, and yes there were some changes from the source material (as always happens in these adaptations), but I thought the casting was right on target, and the right "feel" was achieved, balancing the comedy and pathos from the original Lee/Ditko/Romita source comics.

10/10. All of the complaints I've seen are nothing but nit-picking. As far as the birth of the MODERN super hero movie is concerned I think X-Men is the only other film that might try to claim that title. But Spider-Man really embraced the use of CGI and the combination of action, drama, and humor along with a respect for the original source material. Also, Spider-Man is the one that caused everyone else to start making superhero movies again in earnest due to it's huge box office success.
