Brando actually puts in a spirited, inspired, and believable performance. Val too, actually. It's really not that bad. It's just not very good.

I have to confess I haven't even seen this yet, maybe someday I will. But based on what I've read, it seemed like it was a very troubled and unpleasant production. Whether there is actually any truth to this who knows, but I heard that Val Kilmer was a complete asshole on the set, doing stuff like flicking cigarette butts on heads of crew members and even getting into a physical fight with one. And as soon as director John Frankenheimer finished shooting the last scene with Kilmer, he famously yelled out "Now somebody get this bastard out of my sight!"
