I was having a conversation with a high school classmate on MSN in September 2011 when he sent me a link saying he wanted to wear the black dress in the video. It was a lyric video of "Call Me Maybe" and had a pic of Jepsen wearing a little black dress. The view count was around 1,000. I thought the song was too poppy for my enjoyment (I was a RAWK chick, k? I RAWKED out to hard goth music, like Evanescence and Marilyn Manson at that time.) but decided to torrent Jepsen's only album at the time anyway. It didn't have "Call Me Maybe" on it. It was probably a throwaway non-album single, I thought. The acoustic guitar was too POP for my tastes so I deleted all the tracks after a few seconds of sampling.
After the school year was over and the summer semester came along I started hearing "Call Me Maybe" more often. One day in May 2012, while shopping at a Dollarama in Mississauga, I heard it on the store radio and decided to torrent it and give it another chance once I took a bus home. Have played it regularly since.

Interesting question. We all have a "where were you when you heard the news of JFK's assassination (or 9/11)" story...but you believe we are supposed to have a tale to tell about how we discovered "Call Me Maybe"? Weird.
But oddly enough, I do have a tale:
I never heard or knew of the song. Then some USA Olympic swimmers all sang the song and made a goofy video of themselves singing it. That video was shown one night during the Olympics.
I'm not bullshitting. Here's the video:

Alex Jones screaming about the secret messages in it on Infowars.
Honestly, the vid probably had a half billion views and there were Facebook pieces about it.

Believe it or not, like marco26, I actually do have a story for this. I was on the board of an organization that helped to rehabilitate kids who had committed minor misdemeanors; one of tactics used to help them was a jail tour. So we were all on the way there, and suddenly the radio blasts out with this damned song--oy! And it just kept repeating, and repeating, and repeating... Really one of the most annoying songs I've ever heard.
