From the Financial Times – He’s a divorced adulterer who ran a gambling empire, so how did America’s Moral Majority get so evangelical about Donald Trump? Here is what Wayne Flint, 76-year-old emeritus professor of history at Auburn University, says. He has written empathetically about his region in books such as Poor But Proud. A Baptist minister, he still teaches Sunday school at his church and delivered the eulogy at last year’s funeral of his friend Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Trump would not be president without the strong support of the folks Flynt has chronicled — white residents of the Bible Belt, raised in the do-it-yourself religious traditions that distinguish the US from Europe. I wondered how a thrice-married former casino owner — who had been recorded bragging about grabbing women by the genitals — had won over the faithful. Flynt’s answer is that his people are changing. The words of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospels, are less central to their thinking and behavior, he says. Church is less compelling. Marriage is less important. Reading from a severely abridged Bible, their political concerns have narrowed down to abortion and issues involving homosexuality. Their faith, he says, has been put in a president who embodies an unholy trinity of materialism, hedonism and narcissism. Trump’s victory, in this sense, is less an expression of the old-time religion than evidence of a move away from it. “The 2016 election laid out graphically what is in essence the loss of Christian America,” Flynt says. “Arguably, what has constituted white evangelical Christian morality for 200 years no longer matters, which is to say we’re now a lot like Germany, a lot like France, a lot like England, a lot like the Netherlands, and what we have is a sort of late-stage Christian afterglow.”Read the Entire article

Gays and gay advocates[like the OP] are always saying "homosexuality doesnt harm anyone" but that is a lie because we know homosexuality[gay acts] does harm people and therefore society.

tpfkar It definitely leaves some obsessed with some acts while they ineptly try to equivocate between those & the orientation. The only thing Marv ever unpacks is fudge.

"so how did America’s Moral Majority get so evangelical about Donald Trump?"
They pretty much always vote for whoever is on GOP ballot so long as it isn't an atheist or non Christian. Adam Corolla and SE Cupp are both conservatives but also atheists, they would never get the GOP nom, certainly not anytime soon.

tpfkar If bumps are what do it for you. I prefer responding to the content of posts. The only difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is that the Democrats allow the poor to be corrupt, too.

This is a not a mystery.
Trump pandered to their wants like all politicians and they only had one of two choices even within the Republican Party - Cruz or Trump. Trump got enough a bump with evangelicals to counter Cruz and plus Trump got the less devout vote too who admired his version of what wealth looks like.
Plus at the time, they mistook his bluntness/crudeness for honesty.

So by his logic, heterosexuality is "harmful to humanity". Of course the only difference between those two is the tech state of the cure - AIDS can now be staved off indefinitely, but, historically, syphilis has killed FAR more people. So, again, using his logic, homosexuality won't be harmful anymore once its related STD is fully cured. If the factor here is determined by the STDs having sex can carry, AIDS has a ways to go before it's in the lead. He never addresses this point because... y'know... this is more about using the issue to foment forum drama than it is any real concern about homosexuality.

Neither viruses nor bacteria give a shit about sexual orientation. They simply find ways to transmit from host to host, whether through mucus membranes or a shared needle or a blood transfusion.
The outbreak in the U.S., in scientific retrospect, started in the injecting drug users. There was an overlap with the gay community, and when it started amplifying there, the gay community became outspoken activists, something that injecting drug users weren't inclined to do. It was incorrectly labelled a 'gay' disease; it never was just a gay disease. Scientists knew that all along, only idiot homophobes still call it a gay disease after all these years.
And after all these years, that still pisses me off.

Syphilis used to be blamed on touching door handles. It was a homosexual disease too, reason being that anal sex is a prime vector for any and all transmission. Let's say AIDS gets "cured". So now instead of a death sentence, it's just a dollar sign for Big Pharma.
