Probably the first true horror film I watched.

I caught it from beginning to end on TV on New Years Day 1997. Ended up discretely checking for fins in the water when I went with my best friend on a day trip to Ocean City, MD that summer.

The estuary attack was meant to be much more graphic but Spielberg also thought it was too much for the audience.

I liked the movie. But, what I most remember is the public reaction to it. I was working at a news radio station in San Francisco. One afternoon, the lead story on the network news reported that two great-whites had been spotted a mile off the coast of Catalina Island. Our news director was appalled at this silliness, and issued a memo about such stories from our local newsroom, saying (almost exact wording):
If I plot a course, one mile off of the coast of Catalina Island ... from any point ... the spot will be in the ocean. Sharks live in the ocean. Ergo, there is nothing newsworthy about sharks in the ocean. Unless there is an alert to local swimmers about shark sightings, I don't want to hear that on our air. Note: Should a shark be spotted in Denver, I want it on this radio station first![/b]

It delivered the scares, but you felt safe because all you had to do was avoid the ocean. Easy enough to do if you live in Denver!

I saw it on the big screen when it was first released. Great film superbly directed by Steven Spielberg, who was in his late twenties at the time. The film was released when he was 29, so he was probably 27 when he started prepping. Amazing!
So did I!! At the Golf Mills Cinema (now defunct) in Golf Mills or Niles, Illinois.
