Music - has 10 home page forums but apart from Music General is dead
Other stuff could be eaten by a Lifestyle forum but currently takes up more high level forums on the homepage for the sake of a few threads
Yet some of the stuff that people probably came here for are over 50% of the way down the page
And there are people asking for even more forums that are TV/Movie related

The Technology Board will not be missed by 90% of the users- there are far better sites to be found on-line. It should just go- it is clutter.
I did suggest a Movie News posting board- because people browse sites just for news on upcoming movies and star updates and gossip and such. Bet it would get 100 times more use.(and might throw some egg in the face of our past overlords site traffic. two-for-one.
This is just a suggestion of course, it may be sacred to some users.

Need some clarity about who/what we are - can't be all things to all people and probably pointless trying to be

Need some clarity about who/what we are - can't be all things to all people and probably pointless trying to be Basically we are a Movie Board that revolves around certain strong general topic boards. The penalty of removing too many lesser boards is that we quickly lose our novel appeal to a broad range of users and they will simply flee from here in gradual numbers. If it has to do directly with some kind of media, printed or word or fun and communication between users-that should be our main focus. The tech board is hardware. At the present, I have offered my last two improvement suggestions. One practical- A Movie News Board- simple to construct and will attract far more members then the Tech Board. The other is mostly a fantasy of an alt-Individual movie site IMBD2b.freeforums linked to this one, to mimic what IMBD used to have. I am mostly talking to myself at this point ;( so users must be happy to keep things the way they are. The site had grown beyond my wildest expectations-at present, Total Threads: 3,386 Total Posts: 38,061 almost doubled since Monday? some very impressive numbers and bodes well for our future, so my campaigning for this site will now just be put back into a causal stance.

Quoting posts here is really annoying as can be seen when people quote posts and you think where is your comment - oh there it is in the quoted text If we are primarily a Movie board then get rid of all the music, lifestyle forums - personally I think they just clutter the site If you wanna discuss music or the latest MB then there is plenty of other sites out there that are gonna always do it better It's my birthday and I reserve the right to be completely incomprehensible in my replies for the next 48 hours

Too many dead sections will eventually kill the place (or stop it from growing). Any new viewer dropping by and seeing 50 different sections with only a few posts will immediately leave. I say this from my experience as a web designer and running forums for the past 20 years.
Less is more. Keep the active ones, get rid of the dead ones. A lot of them can be combined.

A lot of them can be combined. That is probably the best common-sense solution. Thank you.

On the IMDb I did most of my posting in the Music (Music General and Rock) and Technology (Computer Software) boards. The tech board is hardware and software. On the IMDb there were regular threads about Windows patches. It's not the Tech board's fault that in February Microsoft decided to skip Patch Tuesday for the first time ever. If you try to turn this strictly into a Movie/TV board, you will lose users.

The hot boards should be on the home page

Removing it altogether will push some people away, & films that feature music & have discussion may attract people to learn about new or undiscovered music & other things not yet anticipated.

The hot boards should be on the home page There's an easy solution to this "problem". Create a folder in your browser bookmarks called "Your Favorites - IMDB v2.0" And then in that folder put whatever your favorites are. In my case, it looks like this: Your Favorites - IMDB v2.0 Music General | IMDB v2.0 Rock | IMDB v2.0 Computers and Software | IMDB v2.0 Science Fiction | IMDB v2.0 Doctor Who | IMDB v2.0 Cult TV | IMDB v2.0And just like that my personal "hot boards" are easily accessible!

Sorry, did not mean to offend, the Tech Board usually has one of the smallest user bases but I suspect the fiercest just a suggestion. My current 'User' opinion is that I really don't mind the cluttered page, why not let it be cluttered? Usually I settle on a couple of boards and link back to those from my threads page and once and awhile I will glance down through the boards to see what may be going-on. Consolidation is a problem because we all know that is just another pain in the butt of digging down to see if a board is active when we can get the idea by just glancing at it on the open board. Would much rather have the clutter than all of the extra running in and out.

Wouldn't really agree with that, there is 12 boards on the home page with just 1 thread and 40 with 5 threads or less Just makes for a very long home page (must be crappy on mobile) with stuff most people are not interested in

Sorry, did not mean to offend, the Tech Board usually has one of the smallest user bases but I suspect the fiercest just a suggestion. No offense taken. Let's not forget that this board is still new and growing. I fully expect the various boards to fill out with time. Usually I settle on a couple of boards and link back to those from my threads page and once and awhile I will glance down through the boards to see what may be going-on. That's what I do. I right-click on my "Your Favorites - IMDB v2.0" folder and select Open All in Tabs. I review my favorite boards. Then I look at the home page to see if I've missed anything interesting. My current 'User' opinion is that I really don't mind the cluttered page, why not let it be cluttered? Consolidation is a problem because we all know that is just another pain in the butt of digging down to see if a board is active when we can get the idea by just glancing at it on the open board. If done well consolidation can be helpful, but too much can make things difficult to find. In a post earlier today, I directed a user to the dedicated "The Walking Dead" sub-board. They were posting on the "Cult TV" board, apparently because IMDB v2.0 > Television > Popular Series and Fan Favorites > The Walking Dead was too hard to find. The irony is, back on the IMDb, I virtually never used the main page. I used the IMDb's "Your Favorites" page as my primary means of navigation. Since IMDB v2.0 doesn't have that feature, I basically created my own via a bookmarks folder.

alpha128,
A balance can only be found if other users come here and contribute their input on the look of the main Board. This is a good time to have this discussion and settle on, should we be as broad-based as possible and be a place for everyone, even if it means having a cluttered look or neat/sterile and narrowed in our topics.
Ummmm,,,,I can think of some very barren movie boards visited lately that settled on the latter.

Was the look of the old IMDB board really the best? with a just a few add-on and updates? No one complained much about it. Did someone save a glimpse of the old board? we are like twice it's size now?

The best approach would be to allow each user to create their own home page, which is basically what the "Favorites" page on IMDb was. I don't know how much user customization is allowed by ProBoards however. The Admin will have to weigh in on that. As I wrote earlier in this thread, a perfectly workable solution to the clutter problem is for each user to bookmark their favorite boards, and to navigate primarily using those bookmarks. Furthermore, the look of this board can't be that bad, it is patterned after the IMDb's, and that lasted over fifteen years.

There are no complaints of not being able to find anything, so I am assuming most experienced boards users are doing just as you have outlined and the clutter is not an interference. I see that the Obituary threads and some pre-production news is popping up here and there, the problem being the threads sink to the bottom and so we do need a Movie News Board even if it adds a bit more- I guarantee that it will be popular. Users Can post the Movie News that interests them the most.
