It is (to me at least) 1 of the Best All-Time Science Fiction Horror Movies ever made. It is also my own Number 1 Favorite Movie. Heck, I even liked the 2011 Prequel to it!

It's wonderful. Not sure where I rate it overall but it's too 5 on the sci-fi horror list for sure.

My favorite film of all time. I'll be watching it on Sunday to celebrate its 35th anniversary.

BEST REMAKE EVER!!! Don't tell me it's not a remake either. I've heard so many people say that it's not a remake. Yes It's another adaption of the short story, but The Thing from another world was the first adaption of the short story and the remake actually takes some cues from the original movie. So you can't tell me it's not a remake.

I'm still fascinated by the creatures. What is their intelligence level? Does that depend on the host? Do they become separate beings when cut in half, because it appears both paths still function?

I agree. There are plenty of questions about the creature that are never fully explored. It's implied that each cell of the organism is independent of the other and will react to protect itself but it also appears to work in correlation and tandem with all the other cells when given the option. Trying to wrap my head around that concept is dizzying.

I realize that I am sole voice on this one BUT:
I hated it. Never knew who anyone was what with the look alike beards. Didn't care who was in danger because we were not introduced to anyone and had no back story about them. It was all gore and mayhem with no real dialogue. The one truly scary moment was a cheap jump scare. That and wondering what in heck was it with the dog at the very beginning.
I cannot understand the love fro this version of the story.
The Thing from Another World gave us characters, backstories, scary scenario, dialogue with actual words with more than four letters.

I liked all versions and prequels, but the Carpenter thing stands out as the genre defining masterpiece. Ironic that it flopped back then.

You may be interested in this short story, which recounts the movie from the Things point of view. Speaking of the short story, how was the creature described in the book? Reason I'm asking is because I was looking for a copy of the book and one of the versions of the book kinda had a goofy looking purple monster on it. I'm pretty sure he was not described as purple and goofy looking in the book right? This is what I'm talking about en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Goes_There%3F_(collection)#/media/File%3AWho_Goes_There%3F_(John_Campbell_book)_1st_edition_cover_art.jpg

"It was face up there on the plain, greasy planks of the table. The broken half of the bronze ice axe was still buried in the queer skull. Three mad, hate-filled eyes blazed up with a living fire, bright as fresh-spilled blood. from a face ringed with a writhing, loathsome nest of worms, blue, mobile worms that crawled where hair should grow."

Well, Now ya have ! Actually, several of us were talking recently about the two films over on the CFB and many did prefer the other version. I almost said "the original" and caught myself just in the nick of time. It all had to do with character development and dialogue vs. Flash bang bleed swear. Glad to hear that you have watched the earlier film. Many just reject it sight unseen.

There's a lot of people who prefer the original but they are usually older and dying off. They do have some legitimate points on why they prefer the original from what I have read.
I prefer the remake but dont think its perfect. I think the Norris scene is the peak, then it slides a bit with Palmer, and the final monster is underwhelming thanks to dark lighting.

Yes It's another adaption of the short story, but The Thing from another world was the first adaption of the short story and An adaptation that almost completely ignores the story (they left snow in there, but couldn't even set it on the same Pole). It ranks for me as one of the worst adaptations ever Homages to Hawks...one of Carpenter's favourite directors. Both Carpenter and Russell have said it isn't a remake of TTFAW It's not a remake.
