Can someone please tell me what the difference is, between a thriller and a film-noir? For our purposes, we refer IMDb.com to determine the genre of a film.

Yes I realise that, but that's not really an answer to the question. What is the difference?

To try and answer the question from the previous poster of what is difference between thriller and film-noir.
Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly such that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations.
A thriller film is a broad film genre that invokes excitement and suspense in the audience. The suspense element, found in most films' plots, is particularly exploited by the filmmaker in this genre. Tension is created by delaying what the audience sees as inevitable, and is built through situations that are menacing or where escape seems impossible.

Many thanks brandomarlon2003 for the excellent explanation. I think perhaps that IMDb should be informed of this, for it appears to me that they don't know the difference either. Never for one moment would I have classed #7 as film noir, and I still wouldn't. It would seem that IMDb don't know what a war film is either, as I note that Private Benjamin has been classed as such. Thanks again ----------------- 13 noir films in COLOR 01. Second Chance 02. I had to disqualify the previous #13, which is not classified as film noir at IMDb.com

llanwyddPlease yourself, but it's on the Wiki list of film noir. I personally have never had faith in IMDb classifications. The mistakes are wide and varied.
