"Compared to what the director had done before, this was a disappointing attempt at filmmaking. Compared to what the director did afterwards, this was a highlight".
Just curious which films match that description.

Heaven's Gate by Michael Cimino. Although some think it's a wonderful film, he made 4 films afterwards all disappointments. (Consider his earlier two films before Heaven's Gate was Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and The Deer Hunter (both great films).

That's exactly what I was going to say! I did like "Signs" and aspects of "The Village." "Lady in the Water" was the big stinker for me...which was a shame, as it could have been pretty good. For a non-Shyamalan answer, I'll go with John Carpenter's "Ghosts of Mars." I don't hate this movie, but its a huge step down from something like "Halloween." To its credit, "Ghosts of Mars" was a hell of a lot more like "Doom" (the game) than the film version.

For him, I'd say "In the Mouth of Madness" is where things really began going downhill. I can't think of too many directors (outside of Shymalan whose creative decline can be pinpointed) that fit the bill for this question. A lot of them just fluctuate in quality throughout their careers.

The Outsiders/Rumble Fish. Not up to the standards of anything Coppola did in the 70s, but they're also not Godfather III or Jack.
Also, Watchmen and Man of Steel looked a whole lot better after seeing BvS.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I personally thought Attack of the Clones was a much worse film.
