I feel very strongly about this unwritten rule; it's flat out wrong.
The batter owes the pitcher absolutely nothing. The only question of respect is to respect the integrity of the game. The object is to win, not to make it easy for your opponent to score an individual achievement that costs your team the game. So it's not a question of if he should or not - the batter has a DUTY to get on base any way he can that's within the rule book. If you don't like it, be better at fielding bunts.

I can't remember who the batter was, but I think Curt Schilling (surprise surprise) had a beef with a player breaking up his perfect game effort once with a bunt single. The thing was that the opposing team was losing 1 - 0. So Curt, the other team should just give it to you? They are trying to win too. So many unwritten rules in baseball are so stupid.

My opinion of Schilling isn't fit to print. And I'm a Red Sox fan.

It all depends upon who does it. Dusty Baker calls for a bunt to break up a no hitter, he's a dick. Joe Maddon does it...good baseball.
Remember that play when there was a pop up in the infield and A-Roid was heading to third and he yelled, "I got it"? A-Roid got crucified for that play. If Jeter did it, it would have been the greatest, smartest play in the history of baseball.
Here's the A-Roid play:

If it's 1-0 or 2-0, fine If it's 10-0, maybe not

If the kid that broke up Verlander's perfect game gets beaned, that pitcher should be banned for life and his manager for the rest of the season. That bunt initiated a comeback and the Tigers ended up losing. Fuck your unwritten rule.

Im sorry, get on base by any means. If you see a weakness, exploit it.
If youre playing basketball, and some guy is one rebound short from a triple double, should you move out the way for him to get it (Ask OKC, they seem to not mind letting their numbers all dip so Russell could get his).
F*** that, I see you arent prepared to handle a bunt, Im getting my hitting average up, FU and your perfect game.

The Tigers gave up 3 runs that inning and ended up losing. Where is the line drawn? When does the unwritten rule kick in? You know why it's unwritten? BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING STUPID!

Besides that, get ya @$$ out there and play.

Normally it would be a crime to break up a no-hitter or perfect game with a bunt, but the pitcher in question is Justin Verlander, and he sucks, and totally deserves to have his perfect game broken up. Besides, he immediately collapsed with a runner on base and gave up three runs, so fuck him. Dude, Jeter would field a ball at short, do a fucking triple lutz double axle, fail to get the runner out, and Suzyn Waldman and John Sterling would be creaming themselves about how amazing and athletic he is, and what a defensive phenom he is, despite all the numbers saying otherwise. Hell, I'm a born-and-raised New Yorker, a Yankees fan since I was a kid, and even I find the Jeter worship incredibly annoying. I realize it's tough to put a value on leadership, tact, and things like media discipline, so there's that, but he was always praised far beyond his abilities on the field. Anyway, there's this: Presenting The World’s Dick-Suckingest Derek Jeter Columndeadspin.com/5819946/presenting-the-worlds-dick-suckingest-derek-jeter-columnIn a world where every member of the sports media lines up enthusiastically to lap up whatever fluid comes out of Derek Jeter's penis, we now have a new champion when it comes to Jeter's canonization. It comes from Ian O'Connor at ESPN, and it made Ken Tremendous cry. Come take a look at this shit.
The ball was in the air, disappearing into the kind of white clouds Norman Rockwell loved to paint…
Yes, because if there's anything Norman Rockwell is known for, apart from creating fully realized illustrations of the wet dreams of modern Republicans, it's painting clouds. Rockwell is practically synonymous with clouds, much like Monet is renowned for his series of depictions of old Chevys in his backyard.
…and Derek Jeter watched it the way a child watches a runaway balloon floating across a midsummer sky.
For it was not merely a balloon, it was an allegory of INNOCENCE CHASED AND FOR A FLEETING MOMENT RECAPTURED. That's what baseball is, you know. Baseball is the MAGIC OF CHILDHOOD, a feeling of grandiose wonder and joy we always return to in our darkest moments. You know, if you're a sportswriter who's into the most horribly clichéd, weepy metaphors ever devised. It's like someone took a Mitch Albom book and condensed it into a single sentence, which is just five sentences shorter than an ACTUAL Mitch Albom book.
