That rare moment when Michael Bay wasn't a liability. You got Nicky Cage in his prime, Ed Harris intense as ever, and Sean Connery just a total badass. Also stems from an era of the ridiculous yet high concept action movie (see also Face/Off). Here Alcatraz Island (someone I spoke with actually confused it with Auschwitz) is armed with VX gas rockets and it's up to Navy Seals led by Cpl. Hicks to save the day.

Bays earlier films are all pretty well done imo. Bad Boys and Bad Boys 2 are great, I loved Armageddon and the Rock. Even Pearl Harbor is decent at times. Once he got to the Transformer cash cow tho...I lost interest.

It's still Michael Bay's best movie. Spectacular action, good chemistry between Cage and Connery, and Ed Harris as the villain really make up for less-than-stellar dialogue and plot narrative.

The only Bay movie I can watch. Hey I made a funny. Bay Watch. This movie has an interesting throwaway line that people might miss. The government guy who Mason dangles over the building terrace, tells the other guy that Mason had the secrets to everything-the JFK assassination, the alien landing at Roswell... If it was me I would have been saying: Whoa forget about VX rockets--Aliens are real and landed on Earth? A bit of an unexpected verbal genre mish-mash.

This movie and 13 Hours are the only good Bay movies. They are both really good, though, and basically equally underrated.

It's a ridiculous movie, but more fun than most Bay fare...Only wish they edited out the pregnant girlfriend part...One of the most annoying roles I have ever seen...

I watch it whenever its on TV.
The line before Tony Todd's demise is great: "because it's you... you're the Rocket Man!"

This movie and 13 Hours are the only good Bay movies. They are both really good, though, and basically equally underrated. I tried to resist but I just can't. 13 Hours is his worst movie imo and it's because he is attempting to make a serious movie and fails misarably. The movie is hideous looking, has the most uninteresting characters imaginable and almost every performance is self-aware. It lacks all sense of tension and emotional resonance for me.

Great movie.
Tarantino was brought in as a script doctor, and you can locate his flourishes if you look for them.
I'm pretty sure "Rocket Man" is his.
Had it been slightly reworked, it could have been a great sendoff to a certain secret agent, and the man who brought him to life.
Of course they didn't have the rights to the character...

I love this movie. You got Michael Bay and Nicholas Cage before they both sort of went off the rails. Sean Connery was a badass in this as well.
I've never seen any of the Transformers movies, but "Pain and Gain" was a relatively recent Michael Bay release that I thought was on the level of his best releases. It's a pretty dark premise, but a great ride that has a lot of fun.
