By that I mean; is there too much Star Wars related merchandise out there? Does Star Wars as a whole feel less like a movie franchise these days, and more like a series of toys and games? While Star Wars obviously didn't start off as an excuse to sell toys (unlike Transformers), there's no denying that there are tons of toys and other accessories for characters like Darth Vader and R2D2. Hell, I don't think there's even any denying that BB-8 was designed specifically to be as marketable as possible. Also, before anyone inevitably brings it up: m.youtube.com/watch?v=fgRFQJCHcPw. So has the franchise basically become one giant toy commercial at this point?

Wasn't it already like that when George Lucas own the rights to it? I mean he had alot of merchandise when the prequel films were being released.

Disney has exploited and prostituted Star Wars more in five years since acquiring it than Lucas did in the previous thirty-five years.

As long as the movies are good who cares how much merchandising there is? Star Wars has had huge merchandising ever since the first movie became a huge hit in 1977.

Now if only we can get the House of Mouse to stop producing corporate garbage and return the series to the glorious and universally beloved apex it reached during the prequels, we'll have the other half of the equation. Innit?

While Star Wars obviously didn't start off as an excuse to sell toys it did start off that way, though, check out this clip about lucas' plans to make their money back on the toy line:

Episode I was the most merchandised film of all time I believe. Lucas didnt become a billionaire from the movies, it was the merhcandise. And good for him. He was a visionary.

Been that way from Return of the Jedi onward, but now more than ever with Disney.

Been that way from Return of the Jedi onward, but now more than ever with Disney. It's been that way since the beginning. Lucas took the merchandising rights instead of his director's fee when negotiating with the studio. It seemed laughable at the time, but Lucas knew what he was doing.

Lucas started it as a toy franchise in 1977

Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money of the movie is made. Yeah, Star Wars did start this but so what. It’s not really important to the fan and can be ignored.

It’s a little weird seeing responses to a thread that’s four years old. I forgot I even made this thread.

No, SW is not too merch driven... and at the same time Yes, there is too much SW merch. I don't think it's been reliant on merch since the mid 80's, & at the same time there is SW junk in all corners of retail universe.

Yes, and that's what's led it's fanbase to be considered "toxic" more than any other reason. A film is a piece of art, it's meant to be interpreted, thought over, and understood-- but it has to start by being aesthetically pleasing. When you walk around an art museum, you see a painting and the first thing you notice is the color palette, and your brain will tell you within a second whether you like it or not, if you don't like the colors you'll just move on to the next. Nobody stands in an art museum complaining and dwelling upon everything they hate about a painting. In most cases people go to the movies, and if they don't like it, they'll move on and forget all about the movie halfway through dinner. Star Wars isn't like that because it doesn't have fans it has consumers, and when consumers get something they don't like they feel robbed of their investment, not just the investment of the $12 movie ticket and 2 hours of their time, but the total investment of their entire fandom. I've always wondered what people mean when they say "(fill in the blank sequel) ruined Star Wars", and this is all I can come up with-- because they didn't like that particular movie, that therefore means their forty year old Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure has lost value.
