Traditional: I consider this to be the "happy" Superman. There is more of a focus on how Superman saves people instead of how he fights the villains. The character is held up as the greatest role model on the planet and (mostly) everyone loves him.
New: This is the "dark and troubled" Superman. He is practically a god and he fights the villains with extreme aggression. He will kill if he sees it to be absolutely necessary. The world is divisive on his presence (both in the real world and the medium of movies, games, comics, etc.).
Which do you prefer? Each has its pros and cons. I think I would lean towards Traditional, but the New take seems to be a bit more intriguing overall. Tough call.

I love the traditional approach but I'm gonna give my vote towards the new one cos it's something fresh and interesting. I've always been fascinated by character deconstruction, especially with Superheroes, and I've actually enjoyed what the DCEU has been doing with Superman- contrary to the popular opinion.
I like that the DCEU is seemingly building towards the more "traditional" rendition cos it feels somewhat earned. We see the character struggle and be conflicted because the world doesn't fully accept him. His sacrifice turns this around as he's no longer a divisive figure when he is reborn, which can make him the happy go lucky hero that people prefer. As I've said, the "traditional" approach is all well and good but this newer look on Superman is somewhat fascinating.

With the right script and the right director I think Cavill could have potential to be good, but as of now I'm still waiting for that to happen.

If the moral, straight-laced hero doesn't sell well in today's market, how come Captain America was in the highest grossing film of last year? |

Making him unpopular with the public and government is not deconstructing Superman. In order to deconstruct a character, you HAVE to deconstruct something about the character, themselves. Having the public and government go full "normal people vs. X-Men" on him is the easiest damn thing thing any filmmaker can pull off, and frankly, it's annoying at the best of times. If they really wanted to get clever, they'd have picked something about Superman's usual M.O. to shred. Such as his "no kill" policy. Welp, can't deconstruct that since he kills in the DCEU all the damn time. Using Zod as the means to show that Superman's No Kill rule can't work all the time would have been ideal, but they hosed that down their legs before they even had the chance. They need Doctor Who writers on this. They knew how to deconstruct their weird alien man protagonist. |

But they went too dark and just plain depressing with him in BvS |

it's obviously an arc, like DCEU-Bats he will go from edgy and grey to the more traditional approach, but hopefully updated at that.
With Superman you need a new approach as he has been in too many shows, films and other media depicting his childhood (10 seasons Smallville), career (Lois and Clark etc) and blood relations (Supergirl). Been there, done that!
Being traditional may still work with superheroes who have not been in the spotlight that much in the last decades, such as Cap America, but not with superstars like Superman, I rather watch the numerous classics in this regard. |
