Blade Runner is overrated. It's way too slow and uninteresting.
The Thing is good but the effects repulse me.

Love both of them but I think I like "The Thing" a bit more.

I recommend re-watching it. I saw it for a second time and really enjoyed it and have re-watched it dozens of times since then. Now it's one of my all time favorites.

I was 15, it was the Director's Cut theatrical release. My friend told me it was "Like Star Wars." I literally fell asleep in the theater. Watched it again in my early 20s and was completely blown away. It's possibly my favorite film now, I've seen it countless times and I'll watch it every time I come across it on tv. Every time. Like me, you were probably expecting something else with all the hype surrounding it. I urge you to try watching it again sometime, now that your expectations are out of the way and you can appreciate it for what it is.

Two excellent films with the same release date. I wonder how often this has happened in the history of cinema?

This thread called for a poll.
Both solid, but don't love either of them, probably The Thing by a hair.

Saw The Thing a couple of nights before it opened (I was an usher at a cinema), saw Blade Runner opening night. Loved them both and couldn't understand why they both flopped hard that summer. Glad to see they've both become classics and gotten the recognition they deserve.

Glad to see they've both become classics and gotten the recognition they deserve. Numerous books and articles I've read have blamed The Thing's lack of success on two things. It was competing with the massive ET, released only two weeks before - an optimistic, family friendly alien film - the direct opposite of The Thing. And, it's a dark, Summer movie set in the freezing snowbound Antarctic.
