Well some not only have great artwork but are also good movies such as Fright Night. Dolls (1987) is one of my favorites and all the artwork is just awesome: The original poster The later poster used also on most DVD's And the latest from the blu ray that I own A movie with great artwork poster but the movie itself is not much to shout about, The Child (1977) One would expect some real creepy kid movie but actually her input is rather limited. But of course there is always the fantastic The Bad Seed (1956) yearspew I actually think Stage Fright is one of the better slashers, and that is coming from someone who isn't fan of the subgenre

This VHS cover scared the hell out of me throughout my childhood, and for some reason I always managed to come across it: Cool. I remember being freaked out by the "Hellraiser" VHS cover.

Watching Trick or Treat (1986) now and I like the poster. Plus, Halloween is a week away, seems timely.

Watching Trick or Treat (1986) now and I like the poster. Yeah, that is one great looking movie poster, sadly none of the DVDs I own seem to think so (or did not have the rights to use the original) so instead they have just put up some terrible photoshopped oversized faces of the two most famous people in the film (who barely are in it for more than a few minutes, or less). And still (especially Ozzy) they do not look much like the characters they end up playing in the film either. I hate these kind of dull/annoying rushed DVD/Blu-ray artworks, which looks like it was done within a few seconds, then straight onto the next one. Still, the other DVD version I have, and where in fact it is exactly the same movie version and release, only with an even more awful artwork attatched to it. To make it even more of a lousy job, on the flipside, they brag about famous rock and metal bands who have their music included in the film: Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Anthrax, Motley Crue and many more. Of course, the closest to their "music" one comes, is through all the band posters that hangs on the wall of the main character, and not one word on either of the DVD copies, that the soundtrack is actually done by Fastway. Sadly, the 2006 Anniversary DVD release by Anchor Bay, that was much rumoured back in the day, never happen. Wonder how it would have turned out, as I remember being very excited about it through most of 2006, only then to never hear anything of it, until years later.

Movie posters... who loves 'em? Probably not as striking or even as important as they used to be. Still I like coming across poster artwork. Old and new. Many great films had very effective posters. Some simple in design, others quite elaborate. On the other hand, who remembers being drawn into something that looked striking on the poster, but once you watched the film you realised where all the creativity/money had gone into. It did its job and suckered you in. I know I've done that on numerous occasions. What are some of your favourite horror posters... hey , throw in VHS covers too. A sad fact, but again it seems like the standard of movies, music and books have dropped so far down, it seems at times people involved in the artwork/posters could not care any less, or put much work into what we end up with. And of those few, rare ones that actually kind of sticks out, it is usually often those that seems to rely on the neverending retro 80s fashion-trend, where modern movies and albums have gone for colors, design and a type of look, that just screams the 1980s. Then again, there are barely any movie and music stores left in my country, and the few ones that are still alive (if one can call it that), are usually dominated by all these boring, depressing and very minimalistic looking DVDs/Blu-ray and music albums (mostly just oversized faces of the lead actors, and lots of focus on how many awards they or the director have won or been nominated for, that and the critics ratings, spread all over). Another thing that I really dislike, is how on Netflix (I do not have it myself, but once in a while, when I visit my brother, I try to give it a go, browsing through to see what kind of movies or titles are in there, and I am never "impressed". Just a big letdown, all together. Anyway, what I was meaning to say, is that they seem to far often switch the famous or most striking/memorable posters/pictures of the films (the classics, cult movies, and so on) and instead we just end up with a poster that kind of "drowns out" with all the other unnoticable ones, and makes it even harder to find what you are looking for to begin with. I am just glad I could look back on all those visits to movie and music stores, rental stores and so on, just remembering how much fun it was to just look through one shelf at a time, and wanting to see all these exticing movies, and where you only had time or money to pick a few out of so many, but it was kind of a challenge, but a fun one. Other days, I would just stop on by, and be looking at what kind of new releases the movies store would have lying around, maybe putting up a bit of a shopping list for later on, or comparing prices to other similar stores not that far away. I have been meaning on trying to put down a list of those I have always considered to be among my most beloved horror movie posters/artwork from back when I was a kid/teenager, and that is surely not an easy task. But here are a few that I think deserves to be brought up: Arachnophobia (1990)One of the most striking and beautiful looking movie posters I can remember from my childhood, and it seemed to almost "follow" me around for years, through several rental video stores during the 90s, and even some had it spread onto the wall during the early 00s. It just oozes excitement, adventure and horror, and of course the kind of "This one I really got see" kind of a poster. Of course, I know that many often tend to dismiss the film as far too comical or "over-the-top", but I still like to think it managed to combine horror, adventure and comedy in a very effective way, and certainly one of the best creature feature films to be made during the 90s. The Frighteners (1996)Okay, so it is not all that beautiful looking, but it does what it sets out for, and that is "Wow, now this looks kind of interesting!" I remember many rental video stores had this overblown movie poster, and as a kid I really wanted to see it, but just a few months afterwards, the film just seemed to have gotten "lost", and thankfully it did kind of get a second go in 1997 when you could rent it home, and it was surely one of the titles of that period where the posters really lived up to what it tried to sell the audience, or so I thought. The Night Flier (1997)I am not quite sure which poster I was looking for, but I remember the plane, the thunder, the shadow of the bat but that it still managed to stand out among very many horror releases in 1998. Not a great movie, but certainly an enjoyable and well acted. Bad Moon (1996)Another memorable and very nostalgic movieposter, which probably makes the film look fare more promising than what it actually is, but still I quite like it. Anaconda (1997)Again, great way of selling a probably not so great film, but still one of those few creature feature titles of that time, which I think is still very watchable. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Of course, this one is surely on a whole other level than most of the other ones I have posted. A film that truly scared the living crap out of me as a kid, but over the years when I re-watched it, I could see it more for the party factor and black comedy it has so much of, and I think the poster is one of the best of the zombie genre of that time. Love that my DVD copy glows in the dark, if one have it lying under the lights for a few seconds.

stefancrosscoe That's the problem with buying DVDs years later, the poster art almost never matches the original. It really sucks when you order online and it comes looking like that. Gene and Ozzy don't even look like that in the movie.

stefancrosscoe That's the problem with buying DVDs years later, the poster art almost never matches the original. It really sucks when you order online and it comes looking like that. Gene and Ozzy don't even look like that in the movie. I think Blu-rays are even worse at these godawful "updated" artwork/posters stuff, I mean some of them are just so hideous looking, its like those behind the "job" could not care any less, and just completely pisses all over the original ones, which looks like a goddamn masterpiece compared to the usual bland and terribles ones that comes out on DVD/Blu-ray and so on. But of course, times have changed, most people I know have probably not bought a movie, book or music album for almost a decade, so I guess for them, they could not care how the artwork looks like, but thankfully there are those who still purchases stuff and who cares very much of what they get in return. Here is a "classic" example, of how lousy and trashy it could end up in the wrong hands: The Police Academy franchise (1984-1994) Original artwork/design Updated artwork for the Blu-ray collection, a few years ago, and somehow, incredbily this one was priced very high at first, but the design was so bad that I just, well, stayed away. It looks like something I could make on the old Paint on my computer, if I had a few too many drinks and spent about 4-5 minutes on doing so. However, I remember that the same Collection also released to DVD had a much better looking design/artwork and which seemed to follow the original ones of the franchise. The guy who did this one must surely have hated the films, I could not see it any other way. Talk about a total and complete disaster, no way this monstrosity would end up in my movie collection.
