9/10. Whenever I think about the movie, I think of it as slow and tedious.
Once I actually watch it, though, it's a fast-paced, well-made thriller that succeeds in almost every way.
Greengrass directed the hell out of this movie. Hanks acted the hell out of it, too.

2 nitpicks that keep my rating low.
Firstly, & it's probably I've watched too many movies now, yet the hyper expositional stuff early on is a bit much. Convo in the car listing all his family stuff, then panning the ship as he's entering for our future geography of the action. Followed with a test to show us what's to expect again. Even Phillips' coffee mug with photos of his family just seems like a cheap ploy to remind us again he's a family man. I dunno, these aren't penalties, yet I've grown immune to feeling immersed with such hand-holding.
Secondly, it's 25 minutes at least too long for me. We spend a lot of time with the pirates in the lifeboat, & yet we're never shown any layers of those characters. Instead it's them yelling at Phillips & each other, juxtaposed with the SEALs taking aim dozens of times trying to end the showdown. There's simply too much of of that for me to matter. The movie changes from a heroic drama to more of a military engagement imbalance by the time credits roll.
Otherwise, very well acted, produced, & photographed.
