I mean, I suppose the classic mystery where a detective confronts the suspects one-by-one in the study and then dramatically reveals whodunnit is a thing of the past, but there have to be some good modern mysteries, surely?

David Fincher's Zodiac, TGWTDT & Gone Girl immediately come to mind . All three were really good mysteries that kept you guessing .
The upcoming Wind River (starring Jeremy Renner & Elizabeth Olsen) looks like a solid murder mystery too. Ditto on The Snowman which comes out in the Fall.

Hateful Eight was a good movie but a bad mystery, imo. They didn't effectively give any reason as to why the Hangman assumed there was an infiltrator among those at the inn, nor did it successfully build up tension or throw out proper red herrings.

Apart from what has already been mentioned, these movies come to mind:
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014) - I thought this movie was OK, it doesn't have the best rep, but it made me happy to see the Orion logo at the start.
The Loft (2014) - I didn't really enjoy this...
Before I Go to Sleep (2014) - Enjoyable for me.

maxwellperfectInteresting question, and one that, perhaps, depends on what we mean by "mystery." (I've tried to tackle the subject in my "Favorite Mystery Films" thread, and it's a doozy, let me tell ya!) I'm trying to wrack my brain to see if I've seen a single great puzzle-plot movie since The Last of Sheila ('73), which I highly recommend. Perhaps Zero Effect ('98)? Interesting little independent movie but with some big stars: Bill Pullman as the Holmesian Daryl Zero and Ben Stiller as his not-so-loyal "Watson." I didn't find the plot all that surprising, but it's got some of the best clues I've seen in a cinematic mystery. Speaking of great clues, The Prestige is not a mystery but acts like one: the cluing is audacious and brilliant, and the plot delightfully surprising. My vote for Nolan's best picture, by far. Ditto for The Illusionist. Less well-clued than The Prestige, perhaps, but more of a mystery, with a brilliant variation on an old gimmick invented (as far as I know) by Israel Zangwill. One blog I follow recommends (of all things) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and The Simpsons' "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" as great mysteries. After some thought, I agree with Rich (the blog owner) on the subject. Excellent cluing and fair-play, surprising plots in what are (for mysteries) unusual settings, Hope that helps a bit!

I enjoyed The Girl On the Train (2016), even though I had the ending spoiled for me just prior to seeing it.
It really is a genre that doesn't produce many films of late, I would have to go back to Gosford Park (2001) for another really good recent one.

Y'know, I've never seen Gosford Park, though I like Altman. Good? By the way, I was reminded of another picture that fits the category: Bogdanovich's The Cat's Meow, actually based on true events. Less a whodunnit than a Columbo-style "howcatchem," but quite good as aβwhat do they call them?β"dramedy."

The Night Of is a 2016 HBO mini-series, which is quite good.
In the Valley of Elah is another good mystery.
If the movies don't absolutely have to be recent, then I recommend:
Jennifer 8 L.A. Confidential Jagged Edge Sea of Love Manhunter Basic Instinct Memento Dark City Muholland Drive Angel Heart Body Double Suspect Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
If they absolutely have to be recent, then there is:
Zodiac Gone Girl Inherent Vice Gone Baby Gone The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Shutter Island

I usually try to add stuff that hasn't already been listed, but "Zodiac", "Mulholland Drive", and "Shutter Island" are solid entries. Salzmank "Gosford Park" is definitely worth a watch. I hadn't heard of it until a friend recommended it and was pleasantly surprised. Also ditto on your thoughts on "The Prestige." That was a damn good movie and is on par with "Memento" as Nolan's best, in my eyes anyway. I don't know if it qualifies all the way for a mystery, but the British gangster flick "Layer Cake" (if you saw this movie when it came out, you were hyped for the announcement of Daniel Craig as James Bond) kept me guessing upon the first watch. Gangster movies bleed into mystery territory once in a while, but they're kind of their own thing. Great movie whatever you call it though.

kingkoopaThanks for the comments! I will see Gosford Park one of these days; I like whodunits, I like Altman, and I love the ensemble cast. I suppose I've just been reluctant because I'm not wild about Downton Abbey-esque, elaborate, Austenian costume dramas, and Julian Fellowes based the latter on the former, of course. Still, I will see it! I'll have to check out Layer Cake. Craig is a superb actor, and my problems with his Bonds has less to do with him and more with the scripts--so I look forward to seeing him in everything. Thanks again for the recommendations.

Also a mystery, also set on a yacht. It's one of my favorites (as the folks here well know! ).
