Howard is a classic craftsman having a long history with Lucas and SW. Given the right script and project he is still top of his game, just see RUSH which is beautifully crafted and precise (down to the Austrian accent of Niki Lauda and the locations) with involving character portrayals. Ex ante this is a good, solid, albeit not hip, choice. Fuck hip, I say.
Also, you need 3 main things for a good film: The script, the script and the script. Please, let this not be a new TFA where a completely unfinished script was superimposed with ANH plot beats resulting in a broken storyline and plot holes galore...
Agree with everything except the last sentence. But you are right: the script is by far the most important thing.to be fair, it was really Alfred Hitchcock (and others like B Wilder) who said it first. I just neglegted to quote properly and followed him...

BUT Those directors would then have to be trusted/allowed to put their particular stamp on SW which might mean SW might move away from its niche from time to time (which I personally would welcome), and t doesn't seem like they're going for that right now at Lucasfilm. Probably why those veterans are staying away, for the most part (Howard not withstanding).
However, there's good new on the horizon: Stephen Daldry is rumored to direct the rumored ObiWan movie. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
