he's terrific.
i hope he's able to make something out of that Avatar series. the first one was probably his worst picture and didn't exactly leave me wanting more.

Yes, he is still a good director. I think he's among the best action directors and has always been on the forefront of groundbreaking visual effects. Dialogue is not his forte, but he has written various strong female characters.

Jerk beat me to it. Cameron is an excellent director, but I wish he'd let someone else write the screenplays. The writing is the weakest aspects of his movies. But he's still great nonetheless.

He's a great action director, but he hasn't made anything great since True Lies. Avatar was nothing more than a forgettable remake of Dances with Wolves set in space, and I've never been a fan of Titanic. I just wish he would give us another great Terminator or Alien film instead of making 3 more Avatar sequels.

The only movies of his of any real worth is... The Terminator (1984) (8.5-9/10). everything else he directed, outside of T2 (which i mildly like), is Thumbs Down status.
so basically outside of The Terminator he's very overrated if you ask me.

I'd say he knows what the people want but here we are with 10 Avatar sequels that probably won't even happen. I don't even dislike Avatar but is that all he wants to do?

He is a very good director with a fantastic imagination. He's also very good at borrowing bits and pieces from other movies to cobble together something great.
Look no further than The Terminator sequels to see the drop in quality without his talent on board.
There are years that I believe Aliens would have won Best Picture against weak competition.

Yes. Cameron is an excellent director. His screenplays are quite derivative though. You don't generally watch a James Cameron movie in the hope of encountering a truly original story.

FANTASTIC director (one of my all time favorites ) but I wish he would direct more (wish he was directing Battle Angel instead of Rodriguez...oh well).
Not the best writer out there , but his films are highly entertaining . He really pushes the envelope in special effects/cgi and his films feature great action sequences . Also , he is the master of making sequels. I consider T2 and Aliens to be 10/10 each. Which gives me hope that the Avatar sequel(s) will be great

Isn't that Jesus' son? Cameron's masterpiece, Titanic, will always be a legit feather in his cap. T1 is also a masterpiece imo. Aliens & T2 are easily 2 of the finest canon/added on sequels ever. The Abyss was groundbreaking enough. Avatar 3D the experience remains peerless, even if the actual film wasn't as epic as its technology. Yes he is a great director, mostly because he doesn't care what anyone else thinks & he takes mighty risks. He was also delivering female empowerment into his films a generation before it was cool. Hell, he practically made it cool all by himself yes?
