So this is the darkest, most disturbing television show that I have ever seen. The Handmaid's tale is based on the book by Margaret Atwood and it was written 30 years ago. I binge watched it on HBO this weekend and I was quite taken aback and rattled. I just needed to come here and discuss it with you. Have you guys/gals seen it (and/or read the book) and what are your thoughts on it? Do you think it will be nominated for Emmys? If so, why and how many and for whom?
The first season has got 10 episodes and I knew of its dark subject matter and therefore I had not wanted to see it before now. I was in a grim mood and did not have anything to watch so I started with watching interviews by the cast and after hearing their thoughts on their characters and on the story, I was immediately drawn in and wanted to form my own opinions. The actors are superb, but the story is so eerie and brutal and perverse that I have got difficulties wrapping my head around it. I am relieved that it has got a 15 year age limit, and in my opinion it could even have a 16 or 18 age limit. The worst thing about it, though, is that everything happening in the book/tv-show has sometimes, somehow somewhere happened/is happening in real life.
Please, Discuss.

At first, I wasn't sure I would like it but by the end of the first episode, I was hooked. Brilliant performances by Elizabeth Moss as Offred, Alexis Bledel as Ofglen, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy & Samira Wiley as Moira. It's brutal, cruel, disturbing and highly emotional. Truly excellent show. Can't wait to see season 2.

Yep Hulu has a hit on their hands. I wonder what this shows success means for the path.

A hit indeed! Was it your cup of tea? Looking forward to the second season? Both Bledel, Moss and Samira are nominated for Emmys. The path?

I think they made the right decision by changing Serena's age to a younger woman in June's age because it made the atmosphere different and dramatic etc. What do you think?

I do too as it created more of a disambugation between her and her husband as well.

I like him as an actor, but his character is despicable so for me that created a weird contrast. I have seen many interviews and apparently M. Atwood will be very involved in writing season two, so in my opinion that is promising. I like the actors in this so much, but story-wise it is quite difficult to re-watch the series. I wonder What will happen to "Oflgen"?

Why did you not think it would be a hit and why do you think it resonated so strongly with viewers today even though the book was written 30 years ago?

Well feasibly viewers often can feel very aloof regarding ideas which are a little too much of a parallel to real life. Now that aside I surmised it'd be a disappointment in life with the path or man in the high castle.

I am glad it is a hit, but at the same time I am repulsed by the story and how brutal and twisted it is. It is very well made and chillingly familiar to a certain degree. Some poeple think that one easily can draw parallels to real life while watching it, and some don't. It was a long time ago since I watched a series that really stuck with me ever since watching it.

I have not seen that particular show so I can't comment on that one, although It's probably frustrating that it did not get nominated if you like it a lot. Is it better and/or similar to The Handmaid's Tale?

No outside of both being dystopic honestly. Right. So do you think the show will follow the books storyline completely?.

So do you think the show will follow the books storyline completely?. I think the first season followed the book very closely. Right? There is not much known material for the second season, but as I've understood it, the author (Atwood) will be closely involved in writing and mapping out the next one, so that's great!
