10/10 - This movie started a new genre of comedy. The ultimate spoof movie.

Seeing the real Airport movies, this is a laugh feast, especially Airport '79 the Concorde, one of the most undeliberatly fun movies made on a big budget.

The only caveat I have about this movie is that younger audiences (well, anyone under 50, I guess) will never be able to completely experience the film's impact when it was first released. It's still funny, but you really had to be there in 1980 to get the full effect of the hilarity. Not only did it help to have grown up on MAD magazine movie parodies, you also had to put up with those turgid Airport sequels, and be familiar with all the cultural references (from those coffee commercials to the presence of Barbara Billingsley). And of course, audiences of 1980 would recognize such actors as Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen ONLY as somber, deadpan dramatic actors. It was only the second, and last, time I saw a movie in a theater in which the audience laughed almost non-stop throughout the movie (the first time was Young Frankenstein). 10/10--Still funny for me, and it was only within the last several years that I learned that it was based on a film from the 1950s, Zero Hour!--it even contains some of the same dialogue. TCM showed both movies as a double feature; I wish they'd do it again soon.
Moral of the story: when given the choice of steak or fish as an in-flight meal, order the lasagna.

8/10 but I need to watch it again.
There is something prophetic about the airport controller who turns gayer and gayer behind Lloyd Bridges.
One of my favorite moments is when Robert Stack is driving and the road is going haywire behind him and the passenger mentions a name just as Stack hits the guy on the bike--and he says "hey I know that guy" and the passenger looks back in bewilderment to the road victim: "You do?"
Re: Leslie Nielsen The problem with him in later films is that he was most funny when he was not trying to be. In the various later 90s spoof movies he did he was trying too hard to be funny.
BTW-around the same time as Airplane he did a film "City on Fire" which was unintentionally(?) funny as a disaster movie--in one scene he has to put out a fire with a fire hose and he puts it between his legs.

it is one of those movies that if you revisit it once every year or longer, you think it is a masterpiece. but if you see it continuously or it is on some stupid assed cable channel who apparently only bought that movie, then it gets monotonous and less enjoyable. like you don't want to recite the lines while you watch it.

10/10 for me! I remember watching those Airport movies on tv when I was a kid, so this was grade A parody material.
