It could be a triple whammy for the Germans after successfully taking the Confeds Cup and Under 21 Euros titles. Two games yesterday in Group A where Portugal did Georgia and Czech saw off Sweden. In today's opening Group B games Bulgaria face England and Germany meet the Dutch.
Germany 9/4 England 3 Portugal 5 Holland 11/2 Czech 15/2 Sweden 20 Bulgaria 33 Georgia 66 (skybet)
Tournament info, if you want it.

Far too many of these tournies. The sequencing does bother me, yes.

Portugal overcome Czech Rep to take maximum points from their first two group A games and becomes the first side to qualify for the semis. Czech Rep still have a chance to join them but hosts Georgia may fancy their chances after seeing off Sweden to go level with the Czechs on three points. Georgia 2 Sweden 1 Czech Rep 1 Portugal 2

Crikey! Future's looking bad for Germany Today they face Bulgaria (1/6 the German win) whilst England square up to Holland. The group is wide open really, but with no fannying about for semi spots, the teams know what they have to do - finish first or second to go through.

Best sporting birthday you've ever had? No doubt about it for me. Euro 96. England 4 Holland 1. What a day that was. Everything came together, just on that day. In yer local. Sunny day. Place packed. Regulars and non-regulars. Gerry the landlord has no use for his Irish flag and has reluctantly dipped in the petty cash for a few St George's banners and decked out the place like only a cunning businessman could. I can't remember which of the four England goals it was but the place went predictably mad. I was by the bar. It went in. We went berserk. All I can recall is that there was a young lady near me (I remember she looked like a young Whitney Houston) and my flailing arms caught her glass. One of her ice cubes ended up in one of her slip-on shoes, which must have come loose from her foot in all the commotion. I'm like "I'm sorry, love!" She can't hear a fricking word I'm saying to her but her silent smile speaks volumes : "No problem, we're beating Holland!" What a fucking good day that was.
Today England have done the Dutch again, one-nothing after it looked for all the world like it was gonna be a stalemate. Brereton on '84, finishing off the loose ball after Ryan Sessignon's left-foot rocket took a deflection. England top the table with six points, Holland on three. It needs to be a much required win for Germany when they play Bulgaria later.

Germany put it about against no-hopers Bulgaria (down to ten on '18) and are now in with a semi-final shout. Two penalties for the Germans and they'll face England in the final group game. England 1 Holland 0 Germany 3 Bulgaria 0

Yes, a comment that may well come to fruition in a few years! I always think it's worth keeping an eye on these U19-U23 comps, whatever country your eyes are on, because you see young, promising talent on display. Players who may not have fully broken into their respective domestic clubs but who show potential and are given the chance to perform in tourneys where people are watching. We can bang on all day about Costa, Messi, Ronaldo, Kane, the list is endless... and folk tune into a game these days to see the big established names. But not many (including me) knew much about any of those aforementioned players before they rocketed into the big time. Most of us missed their early formative matches but now enjoy tuning into to marvel at the finished product. So that's why I don't quite understand when I hear some folk go on about these 'nothing' tournaments and teams made up of 'reserves' but I try to look at it from the player's perspective. It is an international platform. It is playing time. Sooner or later, usually sooner, you will spark someone's interest and get your career advanced. One of the players who really excited me in 2016/17 EPL season was Everton's Tom Davies, not even 20 until next June. A really tenacious, quick-thinking player. He runs like a gazelle, always looking for an opening even when off the ball. He has been rested for the U19 Euros, but I really would have enjoyed seeing him in action. I'm hoping that Rooney's return to Everton doesn't have a detrimental impact on Davies' progress at the club.
But, yes, if Qatar does get to host the Finals in 2022 it'd be good to see a few of the U19/U20 players sweating out the games there! Whoever they play for!

England beat Portugal 2-1 and win the title. It was cagey affairs with Portugal triumphing over Holland in the first semi. And England overcoming Czech Rep by the same score.

Well done to England. They've been doing really well with their young players.
