I think he wanted to play Batman, he loves the character. However, I don't think he ever wanted to direct. I think that was WB's plans. I think he agreed to try.
I remember back in 2015 when he was on the set with Snyder and said how much of an undertaking it is to direct a BIG BUDGET CBM. Then he said he didn't know enough about the SFX and visual effects, so he was learning from Snyder.
Ben is more comfortable directing a character driven, 30M dollar small budget drama. He tried a BIG BUDGET Hollywood film in "Live By Night' and when it failed critically and financially, I believe that was the straw that broke the camel's back.
I wouldn't be surprised if he does't film "The Batman" trilogy like they did "The Lord of the Rings" all at one time (or at least all of his parts) and then leaves the DCEU.
I think Ben wants to play Batman, I don't think that has changed, I just don't think he ever wanted to direct it.

I suspect that he was a bit interested but I bet he didn't want WB or the fanboys breathing down his neck.

Perhaps not. In any case, Reeves should be a worthy replacement. One can only hope he doesn't drop out of the project as well.

I wonder if he could've even made a good Batman movie if he did direct it. Huge action isn't his forte, but then again it wasn't Jenkins' either and WW had the best action of the DCEU so far.

I think Affleck is fickle and is greatly influenced by fans and critical reception.
1. Affleck played Daredevil. Fans and critics hated the movie. Affleck vowed to never play a superhero again. 2. Superhero movies became the big thing in hollywood. There was loads of hype for BvS. Affleck agreed to play Batman. 3. Fans and critics agreed that Batman was one of the few good things in BvS. Affleck agreed to direct the Batman movie. 4. BvS continued to get hated on by critics and fans. Generated a ton of backlash. Affleck now didn't want to direct the Batman movie. 5. Suicide Squad came out and was widely panned by both critics and fans. DCEU's reputation was going down the drain. Affleck wanted to drop the Batman role after JLA and leave the DCEU completely. 6. WW came out and was a big hit. Affleck is now a bit more amenable to remaining as Batman.

I think he did at one point. But the critical beating that BvS and LBN took really got to him.

I think he did at one point. But the critical beating that BvS and LBN took really got to him. I think his ideal Batman film would have been a 50M dollar, low budget, crime drama Batman. One in which Batman is the worlds greatest detective. Lots of choreographed martial arts is all the action he wanted to film. You know, a live action Batman: The Animated Series

But Affleck knows gritty crime stuff, which is Batman's world first and foremost. I think he would have been a great fit for director. That was my first thought when he got cast in the first place.
