Tyrone Power made a lot of good movies in his short lifetime--My favorites:
Son Of Fury(1942) an adventure story that really works
Jesse James(1939)
Abandon Ship(1957)
Rawhide(1951)
Mississippi Gambler(1953)
Luck Of The Irish(1948) my favorite comedy from the 1940's

Witness for the Prosecution (1957) and Abandon Ship (1957) would have been the first films I saw him in. I had to work backwards from there, not an easy task, pre-VHS and DVD and internet. Lots of scanning the TV-Guide was required! What I cannot get my head around now, was that he was only 44 years old when he died. (1914-58) As a kid I thought that he was an "old man" and he was actually so young when he died.

Ty passed away from a massive heart attack at age 44, but honestly, from the pix I've seen of him in his last years, he looked at least ten years older. I think part of the reason for that was PTSD, suffered when he was a Marine in WWII, and his ship was subject to a kamikaze attack shortly before the end of his tour of duty. Same thing with Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, and other actors who saw actual combat and received their "baptism of fire" during that war. Also, the types of roles Ty had were being given to younger actors, like Cornel Wilde and Gregory Peck. It's possible that Ty believed his career was coming to an end, so he drank and smoked heavily and neglected his health. I have to wonder if his disasterous marriage to Linda Christian, although it produced two daughters, might have been mostly for publicity. And, too, if his bisexuality ever became public, it definitely would have been the end of his stardom. IMHO, he was one of the most tragic stars in Hollywood history.

Universally liked, he seems to have had a dark side that might have involved his bisexuality, his complicated childhood... it's one reason I always like him as a heel
That thing about PTSD- Bill Hopper ( son of HEDDA Hopper , Paul Drake in tge Perry Mason Tv show) was a navy seal as a result of one harrowing experience, his hair turned white.

So, that's how it happened! I've often wondered about that. Thanks, marsha.

The Mask of Zorro Nightmare Alley Witness for the Prosecution them1, Ty Power starred in THE MARK OF ZORRO. I believe THE MASK OF ZORRO is a much later film starring Antonio Banderas. ;-)

snsurone et al. I just finished The Black Swan. Excellent little pirate movie, with some superb Technicolor cinematography and very--er--animated, rich performances from Power and especially from Laird Cregar as Sir Henry Morgan. Of the very few Power performances I've seen, this is the best, I feel. I greatly enjoyed the picture--but, then, I do love pirate movies. Thanks everyone for the recommendation!
