It was a fast-paced, funny film, but it had a lot of heart. Honestly, this is the first time I've ever truly felt that this was a "real" teenage Spider-Man. As in he actually acts like most would expect a teenager to act. He's got his heart in the right place, but boy does he have a lot to learn. It isn't perfect, but I'll take it over the BLEH Raimi films anyday. The focus on high school life so many were dreading actually fits with the story they were telling and doesn't come across as forced. Neither does the multi-ethnic angle. Its New York, guys. Deal with it.
Holland and Keaton are both phenomenal, and you really get to feel for both of them. Keaton's character is similar to Zemo's in that he actually has very personal reasons for doing everything he does. He gets a lot more development than most Marvel villains, but they still don't let him take over the film. This is still SPider-man's film. It doesn't retread what the previous 5 films have done, thankfully, and it doesn't beat you over the head with Uncle Ben's famous phrase. It delivers the message by simply showing us Peter having to choose between what he'd LIKE to do and what he knows he SHOULD do.
@dc-Fan and all the other idiots who kept calling this: Ironman 4, featuring Spider-Man. Tony's barely in the film. 10 minutes, tops. Yeah, I was surprised, too. The trailers made it look like he'd be the costar, but he's in Homecoming only slightly more than Nick Fury was in Ironman 2. The only action sequence he takes part in is the one shown in the trailers: keeping the two halves of the ferry from falling over. That's it. Spidey fights all his own battles. So shut up, you morons.
@ poelzig: the Homecoming dance is only in the film for two minutes and barely mentioned throughout. So much for this film being a "celebration of a teen dance" as I believe your pathetic taunts went. Its a thing in the film for about a whole ten minutes before the dance, itself, too.
No, the film isn't overcrowded. Keaton is THE villain. The others are just his gang.
The basic plot of the film actually touches on a subject only Agents of SHIELD, the Netflix shows, and the Shorts have done so far: it's basically showing us the street-level reactions to the various battles and incidents involving superheroes. Oh, and boy, does it EVER do it infinitely better than Man of Steel or BvS could ever hope to achieve. While those films attempt to wax philosophical, this film simply shows us how the people live in a world where the god of thunder can duke it out with evil robots, and we're given a pretty close view of the damage control that goes into rebuilding after the fight is over.

This movie felt like I was sitting in the Homecoming writers' room and somehow all of my suggestions made it into the movie. If I were schizophrenic, I would probably be claiming that they pulled ideas directly from my head. This movie was taylor made for my sensibilities. I've suffered through grim and overly sentimental takes on the wall crawler for years - Homecoming was my turn. Thanks Marvel.

When I think of the Raimi films, the first thing I always picture is Aunt May after she wakes up in the hospital after being terrorized by the Green Goblin telling Peter about the first time he ever saw MJ when her family first moved in. "Aunt May? Aunt May? Is that an angel?" God shoot me. I was literally retching in my theater seat!

The will they/won't they MJ and Peter dynamic was grating in the first one. Anything is better than the Amazing franchise which showed little respect for the characters. Transforming into a Lizard automatically makes a good man comically evil and homicidal. Obviously no one bothered to read a reprint of the Lizard's first appearance.

Its out right now in some U.S. theaters. Midwest Boy and I just saw it tonight. Ah, I forgot about the Thursday night early screenings. I'm a Midwesterner as well. So there is a reason why we're both of higher intellect here! 😉 Midwest for the win!

Actually, I like the Amazing Spider-Man cancelled series. It wasn't perfect, but I'll take it over constant closeups of Tobey Maguire's crying face any day.

Amazing was stylistically well done but the characterizations were pale shadows of the source material. Garfield was too cocky as Spider-Man - not a drop of humility. Spider-Man feels fear in life threatening situations.
I cringe when I think about the Electro pep talk he gave... "You're my eyes and ears, Max!" - What a condescending prick. Holland's performance is far better tuned.

I've read comics from different eras, seen the adaptations, and so I am deciding which ones I like based on my perceptions of the IP.

I have been watching the Raimi trilogy and ASM1 this week. And I must say something.
ASM1 is a better film than the Raimi trilogy. That series gets old. Its all the same. Peter messing things up, MJ gets trapped like an Ackbar by the bad guy, Peter comes to his senses and saves the day. All three movies are like that.
ASM1 at least had a fresh take and more stakes.
Tomorrow I see Homecoming and my spideysense is telling me this one will go straight to number one.

Plus, I liked that Gwen Stacy can take care of herself instead of being like a female lead from a 1920s movies. MJ in the Raimi films is just a load of nothing.

People love to call the MCU formulaic and all of the movies are the same despite honest trailers pointing out how all three of the Raimi movies are the same. I enjoyed Raimi's first two but they still feel very dated, TASM brought a different vibe that I really dug. Homecoming looks like it's the most comic accurate Spider Man movie yet. Can't wait to see it in a few hours! Its the fact that Maguire's Parker looks and acts like he should be living in Mayberry, not New York, and MJ being a generic screaming damsel. They should have been played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Julia Stiles.

Raimi rocks... I love Evil Dead 2 Bruce Campbell is the reason Evil Dead 2 was good. Xena & Hercules rocked the first 2-3 seasons Darkman Drag Me to Hell Oz Ash vs the Evil Dead The first 2 spideys were good. I loved Doc Ock. The studio screwed Raimi over on the 3rd film I'm seeing this in the morning for $7 in a plush recliner & a complimentary cup of coffee.

Darkman was good because of Liam Neeson Oz had James Franco Ash vs the Evil Dead: again, Bruce Campbell The first two Spideys sucked Doc Ock was too sentimental The Hudsucker Proxy, The Quick and the Dead, A Simple Plan, The Gift, and Drag Me to Hell all sucked. His film are entirely dependent are having the right leading actor. When he's cast a lame duck actor like Tobey Maguire, suckage follows.
