I think they made him a bit too childish and too stupid. He could have worked better if he was more like C3PO - a softy who helps the heroes.

Because people are sheep with no minds of their own. Haters on the internet decided to hate him, along with the prequels, so the foolish sheep jumped on the bandwagon and hated them too. The character is fine. He just got a bit too much screen time is all. Your theory might have legs - were it not for the fact that The Phantom Menace was released in 1999. "Haters on the internet" did not have the power to start avalanches back then. You're projecting the world of today onto the world of 18 years ago. I could hear people groaning in the cinema the instant Jar Jar first opened his mouth; and indeed, I was one of them. That's where the hatred began, not on the internet. It was so recent, yet a different era. People saw the movie first, and by the time any consensus or indeed discussion took place, everyone had privately made up their own minds.

Why bring in a new character and make him almost the same as another character? Why can't he be childish and stupid? There are evil characters, heroic characters, fat characters and thin characters. Why is there not allowed to be a childish and stupid character in this universe? You are not making any sense, guy.

I learned recently that Michael Jackson wanted desperately to play Jar Jar Binks...yeah, that would have really helped his career!
