The only movies i give a Thumbs Up from Michael Bay...
1.Bad Boys (1995) - 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 246 movies)
2.Bad Boys II (2003) - 6/10
3.Transformers (2007) (needs a re-watch to make sure i still like it. my previous re-watch of it was Aug 17th 2012)
everything else... is average at best. which means 5/10 TOPS (i.e. Thumbs Down).
for the record... i used to think Armageddon was a solid movie years ago as it was June 15th 2014 when it took a hit. even The Rock used to be a solid movie for me but no longer holds up as of my most recent viewing on Oct 9th 2014.
p.s. i have seen 12 out of the 13 movies he's directed. all besides the newest Transformers movie which i may eventually see but i kinda assume it will be a Thumbs Down at the end of the day. but should be okay enough to see once.

can't properly rate Transformers 4 since I have and can only watch it in segments, and have never seen Bad Boys 2, The Rock (well sorta) or Pearl Harbor.

I'm gonna rate in the release order of his work,
Bad Boys - 7/10
The Rock - 8.5/10
Armageddon - 7/10 ( It's something of a childhood favorite)
Pearl Harbor - 6.5/10
Bad Boys 2 - 7.5/10 (BB1 has the better script, but BB2 is just crazy on a technical and spectacle level, and Lawrence and Smith seem to "click" more, feels like the original on steroids)
The Island - 7/10
Transformers - 8/10
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - 5/10
Transformers: Dark of the Moon - 7/10
Pain & Gain - 7.5/10
Transformers: Age of Extinction - 6/10
13 Hours - 8/10
Transformers: The Last Knight - 6.5/10
I think he is better when working with R-rated material, you would think being more restraint would be a good thing for him, but I don't think something like Bad Boys 2 could've worked as a PG-13, and while they may not have worked in a Transformers or Pearl Harbor, some of the jokes featured in those would feel right at home in a Bad Boys.

Pain & Gain's not an easy film to watch and judge, its divisive but for a Bay film its a very different type of "divisive", as in there can be serious debate over its content and presentation and its portrayal of real life events and not just on a basic "good or bad, pick one" type of way that's common with most of his films, which makes it all the more "interesting". I really liked the film, but think a TV mini-series would've suited the story a bit better because there were more people involved and more crazier details they glossed over for runtime - For instance, the reason why they decided to kidnap Marc Schiller( Viktor Kershaw in the film) during the day time in outfit was because they intended to kidnap him on Halloween night, however they decided to get wasted and party hard at a strip club instead. |
