it was weird.
was out at brunch and ordered a 2nd bloody mary cocktail when my 1st one was running low so it would arrive when the food arrived.
food arrived.
still no drink.
had some water too so no big deal.
go to the bathroom, come back, and when i sit down, the cafe owner, plops down bloody mary, and says it's on the house b/c it was late.
i said, 'no worries, don't worry about it.'
she said, or more, she yelled, 'say thank you!!!'
i did. i gave a 'thanks'.
but should i?
what exactly am i giving thanks for....i mean the drink was way late, i didn't ask for her to comp it, i didn't complain either...

Something could have been going on with the server and manager over it. But yeah.

I sure hope that you didn't tip her. I work in the hospitality industry and what she did was completely out of line, especially considering the way you responded to her. I would of fired her on the spot.

i just thought it was funny. the idea that someone yells about graciousness! I learned a valuable lesson like that. But I was the service person. We were slammed when I worked at a spa desk, just before Christmas. We had to handwrite gift certificates while keeping up with room cleaning, room calls, phone calls. I wrote one out for a guy, he walked out in a huff, walked back in and yelled, "NO, thank YOU!!" and stormed out. I've wanted to thank him, but I hope he's dead now.

She should be fired. Beyond unprofessional what she did. I hope you didn't give her a tip either, and I would never eat at that place again.

I would of fired her on the spot. Better than no tip, a three or four cent tip. That way, they know its intentional. I would have had an honest-to-God, textbook shit-fit. I hate rude service people. Can't handle dealing with the public, get another line of work.

But it was the manager who brought the drink, not the server, so tipping or not tipping wouldn't come into play, unless it was the original server's fault that you didn't get it timely.

I missed the part that it was the cafe owner. I would never go back and give them a terrible review. From experience I know that a bad review can decrease business by up to 20%.

Absolutely. Otherwise you may have to feel this wrath: Rude Waitress Owns Stunned CustomersFYI to all reading - I bartend PT and have to go to the BOH (Back of the House) on occasion to pick up food to serve to people sitting at the bar - you probably all have an idea - but you don't want to know what people are doing to your food before you eat it - I've seen some horror stories ** side note on Bloody Mary's Nuts - some places have the pre mixed container of Bloody Mary Mix and all you have to do is add the vodka and celery stalk. Others? Their is no pre-mix. No excusing rude behaviour. But when a bartender is slammed they roll their eyes at a drink that takes awhile to concoct - it's not necessarily you - it's the situation they're dealing with - they may be running around like a chicken with their head cut off with 10 things in the back of their mind - and if there's no Bloody Mary Mix - they've got to get Tomato Juice, Horseradish, Pepper, Salt, Worchester Sauce, Tobasco - which may not seem like much - but dependent upon the establishment may not be so readily available - I wouldn't take it personal - just that she was having a hard day - not excusing her behavior - but a bartender gets a request for a drink over 3 ingredients that aren't readily available and the place is jumpin' it's easy to lose your cool when you shouldn't

I would of fired her on the spot. Yep, she's totally out of line and probably in the wrong kind of business. I have a few rules for wait staff. I never call them out about it though. And hey, maybe I'm wrong, I just think wait staff/hostess should: 1. Never refer to you and your party as "guys." And absolutely never as "honey" (got called that twice today) 2. Never ask "have WE decided what WE'RE having." Maybe this is something they teach in hospitality, but I think it should be "you." Pretty sure the waiter/waitress isn't gonna pull up a chair and join us for dinner. 3. Never physically touch you - I've had wait staff deliberately touch me on the arm and back while taking the order/checking back. 4. I realize you're busy and there's other tables you're dealing with, but when I'm out on my free refill drink, I really can't be doing with going 25 minutes before you come back and refill. Luckily, this kind of delay is rare, but it's happened. Last guy I had at Cheesecake Factory was refilling within a minute of me emptying the glass each time. That's actually way above what I expect. And rules for the customer: 1. No stiffing on the tip. Talk to the manager if service was that bad. 2. No passive aggressive messages on the receipt as to why you're stiffing them. 3. 15% was acceptable when Reagan was in office. 18% minimum, 20% is better (and easier to calculate). 4. Do NOT ask the waiter approximately 1 million questions about a dish. It basically says on the menu what you're getting, do you want it or not? 5. When the waiter has taken a table's order and goes to your table next before putting in the first order, do NOT buttonhole them for 20 minutes yanking their chain about what you're gonna order and how you used to be in the trade. Do you even situational awareness? Had this happen one time and the waitress did nothing to cut them off and get their order, so we just walked out.

Also: full disclosure - I did stiff on the tip once, in Vegas. There were extenuating circumstances:
1. Between the person showing us to the table and the waiter, I was asked twice if I wanted water, and neither brought it, so had to ask for it again. 2. Waiter promptly disappeared for good after the food was brought. Like, maybe his shift ended, but no one else came to replace him. 3. Waited 30 minutes after finishing the food, nothing. I had to get up and button hole a waiter in another section for the bill. 4. The manager, who I'd seen dealing with what looked like other customers' complaints, promptly disappeared before I could address points 2 and 3 with her.

It is hard to find competent help in any type of service industry. It is by far the biggest problem I face.
