PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES You're going the wrong way ! Finding that the car is on fire ! Paying with melted credit cards. NOT the pillows or car rental scenes even tho' those are the two most often shown as clips. Fantastic comedy/film, and one of the very few that still make me laugh like a crazed maniac, even though I have seen the film many, many times before. John Candy were now finally getting ready for a role that would allow him to be more than just the funny, sleazy sidekick to actors such as Tom Hanks or Richard Pryor, and even more importantly, one that would go down as maybe his finest hour, proving he could be the funniest guy around, but also one that comes along with a bit more serious and complicated backstory, than just being goofy and likeable. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is an all time classic, that I watch every year and it is not just a great comedy, but a really great movie. Sometimes you can have the most promising film script in the world along with all the great and talented actors, and still it doesen't always work that well in the end, but thankfully John Hughes knew how to get the best out of Candy and Martin, and the two sure did not let their director down, as the chemistry between them was outstanding from the very beginning and right up till the end. Even seeing the two men together behind the camera or during interviews, you can see they had something special going and for me none of them would come close of re-capturing that chemistry with any other actors before or after. I remember reading about that after the sad death of John Candy, Steve Martin would move in and stay with Candy's family, to help them out in a very difficult time. It is a shame that the two of them never made another film together, as Del Griffith and Neal Page was two of my favorite duo/pairs on the screen along with maybe Jeffrey Lebowski "The Dude" and Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski. My favorite scene from Planes, Trains & Automobiles (one of many that is) with the burnt out car, and Del sitting all alone in the freezing cold, talking to himself with Neal looking on as his conscience begins to weigh in on him: "What did I do to get hooked up with this guy?"
I loved how it could go so easily from "sad" or dramatic to later on hilarious, and never be over-the-top or too much. The Big Lebowski - scattering the ashes "Goodnight, Sweet Prince."

stefancrosscoe There is something special about John Candy. Even in roles in films I did not care for, he is so very watchable. (cough Uncle Buck cough) Another one I especially liked was Only the Lonely ! Not "fall down laughing funny" but such a nice guy that you can only hope that things work out for him. Enjoyed reading your mini Candy essay very much. PT&A is at least an annual viewing here in the BatCave as well and it seems to get better with multiple viewings. Additional wonderful scene just came to mind: Del selling the curtain rings to make some $$$$ !

This is actually my second favorite LOL Scene to the turkey song scene ( Pugsly is such a riot the way he belts out the 2 main words also ) . I agree actress Christina Ricci was perfect for this role as Wednesday Addams ( excellent all-star cast in both Addams Family films as well ) . " 20 grand for summer camp, and he’s Mr. Woo Woo . " Thanks so much stefancrosscoe for your replies here too . It seems like the quote function is a bit off as of today, so I have to split up my replies in different posts, as I could not put them all into one big reply. I tried, several times, but then all of your post suddenly just disappeared out of the blue. I love a good topic/thread when discussing funny/hilarious movie moments/scenes, and I am glad you started this one up with Adams Family, Family Values, as that one I have not seen for a good while now and it might be time to have another go at it this summer. Not to worry stefancrosscoe I get the occasional crazy computer function glitch from time to time as well ( these things usually work itself out on the next computer restart ? ) . Actually these 2 Addams Family Films Re-Inspired me to start up this subject post thread in the first place . I haven't discussed these movies since a couple of years ago on the Old IMDB which I definitely missed doing as well . So here we again chatting up the best & most memorable funny films that puts a smile on our faces - again . I'm with you here stefancrosscoe on watching these 2 Addams Family movies on DVD again very soon Of course it will have to be somewhere in between my current re-watching of the classic TV Series on DVD The Prisoner 1967 . OH PS - Here's my other favorite from the first Addams Family film ( just a bit of a warning to those here who can't stand the sight of blood or hear really bad singing - don't click on this ! ) . The Addams Family (1991) - School Play

Yeah, John Candy was and still is (for me and probably most of his fans too) one of the most likeable (even when he is playing a not so good/kind figure/character on the screen), and that is not often I see nowdays. He had that natural kidness/sweetness that seemed natural and not "forced" upon the viewer, and as you said, the kind of guy you can only root for/hope things turn out well in the end of the day. I have always wondered how his film career would turn out if he had stayed with us. Would he end up doing indie/smaller movies like Bill Murray, maybe a TV-show (well he had Camp Candy) or more films with John Hughes and so on. I do believe Candy had many great and movie roles lying ahead of him, even though some of the later films he did, was not all that "impressive", he still managed to make them watchable, just by being in the film, and I own most of his films, which I will probably never do when it comes to most of my other favorite actors/comedians. Additional wonderful scene just came to mind: Del selling the curtain rings to make some $$$$ ! I love that part, so funny: "This is Czechoslovakian Ivory!"

I will have to come back to the topic later on, but for now, be sure to have a great weekend and take care.

I saw Lebowski mentioned earlier. My favorite movie. Have seen it hundreds of times, but one scene gets a belly-laugh from me every time I see it.
Everything about this is gold. The thought of Walter respecting this "what have you" enough to wear a suit makes me die every time.
This next one is the hardest I've ever laughed in a theatre. It's probably not everyone's style of humor, but I was cry-laughing. It was physically painful. Mostly due to the music...and that it's played so straight. In general, this is one of the funniest movies I've seen.
...And honorable mention to this short and sweet classic...

Oh yeah, Who's Harry Crumb? might not be on the same level as Planes, Trains & Automobiles "quality" wise, but it is still a very funny, silly/goofy late 80s John Candy vehicle that comes with some great laughs, and while some of the jokes might not be seen as, well "appropriate" by todays "standards", I really enjoyed how he comes off as a big mix of The Pink Panther (Peter Seller), Fletch (Chevy Chase) and the Ace Ventura (Jim Carrey) films by portraying a very clumsy but lovable private detective. Two of my favorite scenes from that John Candy films is when he goes undercover as Vijay from Bombay which features a small guest part by Joe Flaherty as the doorman and then of course the hilarious I am Deszu Djizlas. These scenes are so silly and cheesy but I cannot stop laughing, "MOVE, MOVE DENNIS!", "TOO FOOOOFY!", and my favorite: "Maybe your eyes are playing tricks on me". Now that is how you bury the hatchet, when dealing with a creep such as BUG, the Uncle Buck way that is. The clown scene in Uncle Buck is comedy gold. I had absolutely no idea that it was Mike Starr who was Pootah, the clown when I first saw it. But over the years I noticed that he has done a lot of great and very funny small parts in many comedy films, and while he might often strikes you as a scary looking guy, but from every interviews and behind the scenes I have seen him in, he has always come off as a really standup and kind guy. And he is one of those actors who could have ended up just doing the same "villain/henchman" things in mobsters/gangster films, all the time but instead he is a bit of a "chameleon as he has proven over and over how funny he can be against some of the biggest stars in the movie business: One of the funniest scenes I have seen of Mike is of course his classic character, The Gasman from Dumb and Dumber (1994), and to have a guy like Jim Carrey back in his prime days, it must have been pretty damn hard trying to hold a serious/straight face/mask when doing scenes like this: "Radio! Who needs the radio!? Ready Harry? MOCK! YEAH! ING! YEAH! BIRD! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!"

And speaking of Jim Carrey, well I just had to post this legendary scene. Yeah, I now it might not be everybody's type of comedy, but the Rhino part from Ace Ventury 2: When nature calls (1995) is one of the most hilarious scenes Jim ever did. Pure perfection.

Oh man, some guys really fall down hard. While Steve Martin had a fantastic run of classic and hilarious films from the late 70s (The Jerk) and up till around the early 90s (House Sitter/L.A. Story) the stuff he has done since have mostly been truly shockingly bad, I mean so bad and unfunny I cannot believe it is the same guy. The last two films I saw of him was the godawful "comedies" Bringing down the House (2003) and the almost as bad, The Pink Panther (2006), and Martin even co-produced and wrote those turds. Anyway, this is no time to bring up his worst performances, instead here some great and very funny slapstick comedy from his heydey with one of my favorites, The Man With Two Brains (1983) where Martin is up against mother nature as a good hearted but whacky surgeon who wants to mix the perfect mind/brain (Sissy Spacek) with the perfect body (Kathleen Turner), however, fate has a certain way of making a bad joke out of his genious plans, and it do bring along many memorable scenes, such as:
The Doook of Oil scene where Dr. Hfuhruhurr has found the dream body, but one that comes with a voice from hell.
Or the part where his newly wed wife played to the absolute steamy and hottest level by Kathleen Turner, decides to cool things down a bit on their wedding night.

I saw Lebowski mentioned earlier. My favorite movie. Have seen it hundreds of times, but one scene gets a belly-laugh from me every time I see it. One of those films that always cheer me up whenever I am down or just needs a bit of "comfort" comedy and already knowing what I will get, after seeing it so many times, it still makes me laugh. I guess John Turturro (and rightly so) is often the one given most cred for his legendary part as the creepy bowler, Jesus Quintana but Peter Stormare is too damn funny as the leader and mastermind behind the german group of nihilists "We believe in nooothing, Lebowski. Nothing!" kidnappers known as the art group Autobahn but also his rather sleazy backround as the former 80s porn star, Karl Hungus: "Mein name is Karl, ich bin ein expert"

POLL THE STRING!!! POLL THE STINK!!!
RIP Martin Landau Ed Wood: Tor, are you in place?Tor: JAAA!Ed Wood: Great! Roll the camera. If only there were a place for guys like Ed Wood in todays movie business. A man with real passion for his work and who could do a whole movie within a day or less, and without having to rely on CGI or a budget of 400 billion dollars.
