Unless life in this universe never ends, then nothing matters. Assuming that there is no afterlife, then on an individual basis, nothing matters. On a more societal basis, everything would only matter is life in general never ended. If every living thing were dead, all bad and good things that ever happened would essentially be erased. Considering the multiple theories that the universe will one day end, the idea that nothing matters is most likely true.

Most people realize this but we give meaning to our own lives despite how ephemeral they are and try to have a good time with it.
It's more the experience than the end result, ultimately, and the idea of meaning is something we have applied to existence, not something intrinsic to it.

I often struggle to find a point in doing anything and thus doing most things doesn't even excite me. Then again, I have clinical depression on top of that. On the plus side it makes the idea of death much less frightening and almost a relief.

If it helps you, we have a very dim view of reality and things rarely only happen once. Even when the heat death of the universe happens, there's no way to say that our universe is the only one and that others aren't constantly being born. If you feel insignificant on a more personal level, well, sorry but you are just a grain of sand in a massive desert. Deal with it.

In a philosophy course I once took, we discussed the nature of absolutes and doubt. We really do not know the ultimate--we can only guess. Because any attempt to define the absolute-whether as a deity or smallest atom, can be questioned. Why is it this way? Where did it come from? if you can question it, it cannot be absolute for would not an absolute by definition be somethinbg beyond all doubt. Pretty profound eh? Is there an after life? How do we know our perception of existence and reality is even half true? Maybe what we see as reality is like a rainbow of colors--we assume there is only the colors of the rainbow-but in some other dimension there may be other rainbows with totally different colors that would seem just as familiar and basic to us--if we could see them. If we are talking about death I say, eh don't worry about it. The train may not have an engineer but it seems to be working without the passengers needing to do anything. Maybe the train will run off the track, maybe it wont, in the end all you really can do is try to enjoy the ride. Pretty profound eh?

I am the only thing that matters to me and how do I know the world around me isnt my own creation? It's interesting what we have to convince ourselves of in order to be happy.

Well, then I'm not too interested in talking with you.

What if the real truth was more frightening than anything we could possibly imagine?

if "nothing matters" then the truth of what you are asserting does not matter either, what reason is there to live for truth rather than embrace illusion? that is the trap you have fallen into

We just think things matter at the time. Plus, I don't know for sure if nothing matters. That is really the only reason I haven't committed suicide.
