Second best -- Gregory Peck in MIRAGE
Very best -- Ronald Colman in RANDOM HARVEST
As for the others ... I can't remember the others.

Mister Buddwing
Thirty-Six Hours (a character believes he has amnesia)
Home of the Brave (the one made right after WW2)
There's an episode of The Rifleman in which Lucas has amnesia. Can't remember his horse or even his son Mark. What does he remember that pulls him out of it? You guessed it. His trusty rifle.

One of my favorite amnesia bits was a classic premise used on The Fugitive. Kimble gets amnesia -- and doesn't remember that he's innocent (how's that for alienation?). He phones Lt. Gerard and agrees to give himself up, but then... Well, watch the episode.

Mister Buddwing Thirty-Six Hours (a character believes he has amnesia James Garner not only made two amnesia movies within the same year, but also within the same year he made not one but two movies whose plots hinge on The D Day Invasion being postponed by 24 hours.

I suppose that Memento and Fifty First Dates would not qualify since they are too recent and not classic amnesia type amnesia. How about Anastasia ?

In M, Peter Lorre swears he can't remember any crimes. "Ich kann nicht! Ich kann nicht!" Perhaps due to a form of amnesia.
Christopher Walken's character in The Deer Hunter can't remember De Niro's character and tragically begins to recall the hunt and taking a deer with one shot.

He has bouts of amnesia and a ,low tolerance of loud music/noise as a result, in the 1946 film ... Drawing a degree of inspiration from George Marshall's fatal noir 'The Blue Dahlia' is Gil Cates' military amnesia mystery 'Backfire' (1988) starring Karen Allen, Keith Carradine & Jeff Fahey.

Does Spellbound count?
I've never been all that fond of it, though I know many are.

Does Spellbound count? I've never been all that fond of it, though I know many are. I can't imagine why it wouldn't count. Spellbound's primary weakness is a portrayal of Freudian psychology that's so simplistic it borders on the comical, and the plot suffers as a result. That's unfortunate, as it's otherwise among Hitchcock's most stylistically rich examples of employing what he called "pure cinema" in imparting thematic content and emotional resonance. It's a case of Hitch at the top of his game, let down by a script he should never have accepted in its delivered form. But as such an example, it serves as an illustration of making the most out of next to nothing.

Looky what I found ! The head of the Green Manors mental asylum Dr. Murchison is retiring to be replaced by Dr. Edwardes, a famous psychiatrist. Edwardes arrives and is immediately attracted to the beautiful but cold Dr. Constance Petersen. However, it soon becomes apparent that Dr. Edwardes is in fact a paranoid amnesiac impostor. He goes on the run with Constance who tries to help his condition and solve the mystery of what happened to the real Dr. Edwardes. - Written by Col Needham <col@imdb.com> remember him ? ^^^^^^^^^^
This was the film with the Dali-dreams, yes ?

An excellent critically acclaimed film on the subject is the Finnish film... Mies vailla menneisyyttä , The Man Without a Past (2002) from Aki Kaurismäki . A touching story that blends social drama, romance and comedy, the film tells the tale of a man who has just arrived in Helsinki he is set upon by muggers who bash him senseless. When he awakens in hospital he has lost his memory. Life must now start afresh, living in container dwellings, finding clothes with help from the Salvation Army and making friends with the poor his life slowly begins to regain a sense of purpose...

"Memoirs of an Amnesiac" by Oscar Levant is a must read...just sayin'... Great book! I wore out my paperback copy and finally got a hardcover for my collection. I have all three of Oscar's books! i am a fan of the Peck and Garner memory lapse films, but "Random Harvest" is the ultimate for me.
