Oh, definitely not. Far superior. Ha I wasn't a fan of the Avengers comics-I just assumed that was what it was.

Somewhat jumped the shark with the color episodes, IMHO. The Linda Thorson episodes definitely jumped the shark. Hated everything about them, especially her. Going to jump-start this thread, since Charge! TV has recently taken to running them again. This show was the best, but I'd agree that the Thorson episodes are somehow lacking. I can't really blame her fully; she may have been a quite good actress on her own, but it's evident in these that rather than being allowed to create her own, unique character she was likely pushed towards being pre-fab Rigg/Peel. I'd have preferred it if the show had allowed her to find her way, rather than try to replace the irreplaceable. I also didn't much care for the rather less-than-subtle hints that she's Steed's off-duty mistress--part of the appeal of the chemistry between Rigg and Macnee was the 'are they/aren't they?' teasing quality of what exactly the real nature of their relationship was. (It may not have helped that at times Macnee was beginning to look a little long in the tooth for the role by then.) I think the color and B/W eps each have their own special quality. Color suited the more surreal ones very well (I somehow can't quite picture 'Who's Who'--my personal favorite of the color series--or 'Something Nasty in the Nursery' as having quite the same craziness in B/W. And I can't picture 'Castle D'eath' working as well in color, either). I never felt the show totally jumped the shark, though it did seem to be running on fumes at times by the time of the Purdy/Gambit New Avengers reboot. I seldom watch those, and think that series was probably ill-advised. What's especially interesting is watching the show from the very earliest episodes, and noting the evolution of John Steed from something of a dandified tough (almost thuggish at moments) to the cultured, suave Steed of the years from Blackman to Rigg. How much of that came from Brian Clemmons and how much perhaps from Macnee himself it'd be fun to know.

Excellent analysis, amyghost. And, while I prefer the color episodes because I love that ‘60s TV’s pop surrealism, I agree with you that a “Castle De’ath” or a “Town of No Return” wouldn’t have worked as well in color. Great to see another fan, too! Now trying to see if I get “Charge! TV”… (I have been watching the Roger Moore Saints on “Decades.”

I do own some of the Canal+Image dvd's, and they're excellent quality, definitely the ones to buy. The color really pops in those recordings. I initially began buying them just so as to be able to watch Who's Who, with the truly sublime Freddie Jones, to my heart's content. It was the first time I'd seen the show since I was a young kid, and it's as fresh and exciting now as then. Current television could take some big and much-needed hints from this show as to what makes for a great series.

I watched the Town of No Return last week.
She certainly had a lot of charisma. She was interesting to watch even when she didn't say or do anything. When the movie remake came out I remember one critic's review pointed out that Thurman just didn't have the attitude, especially the facial expression, to remotely compare.

I can't say enough good things about this show. I have recently been rewatching the entire series thanks to Charge network and it just gets better with age. I can't list favorite episodes because I love them all from the time Honor Blackman became a full time regular until the very end. Of course the Emma Peel episodes are my favorites. She was amazing. The camera absolutely adored her and she was infallibly beautiful and charismatic. Her chemistry with Steed was incredible. I love so much about this show. The music, the various opening and closing sequences, the camera angles, the shadows, the super close ups, the fashions, the crazy guest characters (all of them were such fanatics about whatever they did), the scenes of the Avengers driving away at the end of each episode in some crazy mode of transportation. I also loved this;
"Mrs. Peel..." "We're needed."

Did anyone notice that a couple of the Emma Peel episodes are actual remakes of Cathy Gale episodes? "The Joker" is one example.

Ditto with “The Superlative Seven” (remaking “Dressed to Kill”), I know. For my sins, I still haven’t seen all that many Cathy Gale episodes, but this website kept track of how many were remakes.

That was a fantastic website, by the way. I was really pained when David Smith became discouraged over it and gave it up. I keep hoping he'll come back to it someday.
EDIT: I did see he put up a 2017 update, so here's hoping anew.

"The Superlative Seven" was certainly a loose remake of "Dressed to Kill". But "The Joker" is almost a scene for scene remake of "Don't Look Behind You".
This show was so good, sometimes they did it twice!
