I hadn’t even been planning it, but in fitting with the late, great John Mahoney’s passing, I just watched a superb “Marty” episode of Frasier—“Freudian Sleep.” It starts off as somewhat slow, but it builds to a small masterpiece of surrealism. Both the incident with Niles and the baby (in a setting that recalls Dalí’s designs for Hitchcock’s Spellbound) and the final—well, penultimate, before the tag—sequence with Mahoney (which I don’t want to spoil) are hilarious and wonderful. The Mahoney one is even kind of heartwarming (something in which this show specializes), especially now. Definitely one of my top 5 Frasier episodes.
